indie as in indie label.

indie is a really dumb name for a genre, but a good genre.

IndiElectronica 04-19-2006 06:03 AM

all indie means is not commercial really. Can entail tons of different types of music and influences. Then there are indie artists that become commericial... but even those I consider indie.

I don't think anyone has the same definition of indie as anyone else... :)

swim 04-19-2006 06:12 AM

yea, indie music as in lo-fi and then indie as in independent

sleepy jack 04-19-2006 12:11 PM

^oh...k?

Anyways boo boo had me check them out ages ago, Where Is My Mind is my favorite song i've heard so far.

if you like GO4, have a peek at some of the new bands they have influenced heavily.
http://www.musicbanter.com/showthread.php?t=15148

back to the pixies, well, what else is there to say? massively influential, yet massively underrated in my opinion.

TrampInaTux 04-20-2006 02:15 AM

Underrated? They are really well known. I went on holiday to Weymouth just as The Pixies went on tour and they were on the front cover of nearly every magazine. And the Foo Fighters were touring alongside them aswell, and you would usually expect the Foo Fighters to get the front cover.

Sneer 04-20-2006 03:27 AM

they are definetly underrated. yes, they are known, yes they are popular. but their influences on what came afterwards are overlooked. when you think about bands that important in the developement of music, the pixies are one the most significant. yet they still have this status of a cult band.

IndiElectronica 04-20-2006 03:29 AM

they never made it to popular radio much... in that way they could be underated. They owned US college radio though so in that way they weren't underated. Depends on your point of view I guess....

Sneer 04-20-2006 03:36 AM

im not talking about radio so much. REM owned college radio, their still one of the biggest bands around today. im generally talking about the way people percieve the pixies. for example, with exception of doolittle, not one pixies album is seen as truely great. when in reality i think they have 3 truely great albums at least. another example, everybody accredits nirvana to developing grunge. without the pixies there would be no grunge in the first place.

TrampInaTux 04-20-2006 03:49 AM

Yes, that is annoying about the whole Grunge thing I have to agree. I think that as Nirvana are the most popular of the two then those who don't know what they're talking about will just say that Nirvana pioneered Grunge music because they know no different. Oh well, as long as we know what really happened it doesn't matter.

hiu 04-20-2006 04:13 AM

I would say most people with a small insite into alternative rock music would know The Pixies were one of the biggest bands of the late 80s. Look anywhere and you will see Surfer Rosa and Doolittle on top albums lists. And in terms of influence most people realise that The Pixies had a huge influence on Nirvana.

If anything they are overrated. Artists like The Wipers, The Urinals and even slightly more popular bands like Meat Puppets and The Melvins were influencial to Nirvana and grunge in general but are fairly unknown. Alot more than The Pixies anyway.

TrampInaTux 04-20-2006 04:15 AM

Don't forget the Raincoats

hiu 04-20-2006 04:17 AM

I can't say I have listened to The Raincoats before.

thats what im saying. only people with an insight into the "alternative" scene understand their importance - when you see travesties such as U2 going and attaining god-like status. im sorry but i just do not see how they are overrated. you cannot say such a thing just because theres some band similiar that hasnt made it. im familiar with both the wipers and the melvins - the pixies blow both out of the water lyrically and musically. in fact the only band i think is on par with the pixies grunge-wise is the screaming trees. possibly mudhoney.

muppet 04-24-2006 06:31 PM

i hate to agree with this knob but the pixies are great

Mathor 05-01-2006 04:14 PM

gottal ove the pixies

Gigantic

Kadakron 05-15-2006 06:46 PM

A big Hell Yeah! Doolittle is easily the best album. As for songs...I'm undecided.

swim 05-15-2006 07:36 PM

I find it strange that even though I know it's pixies and not the pixies that's what i put in my posts a few pages back and that's why I keep seeing. It's not really anyones fault pixies just sounds akward by itself kind of like doves.

I sincerely apoligize for being a nazi

Kadakron 05-16-2006 04:02 PM

Haha...

Well, wouldn't it still be gramatically correct if you said the Pixies? But not The Pixies?

I'm not sure where I'm going with this...

swim 05-16-2006 05:11 PM

You dont say the Led Zeppelin so, why would you say the Pixies?

Kadakron 05-16-2006 05:40 PM

Pixies is a noun without an adjective infront of it? I don't know...

cardboard adolescent 05-16-2006 08:04 PM

Because Led Zeppelin is not in plural?

IndiElectronica 05-17-2006 04:38 AM

the worst part is a lot of bands like this even the band changes their minds about adding 'the' or not... so some albums are the and some aren't which means I have to manually fix them on my music share :(

makes me think of one of my favorite bands taking the piss of this whole thing and naming themselves The The ;)

swim 05-20-2006 03:04 PM

Er, every album I've seen says just Pixies. What one says The Pixies?

elevator 01-10-2007 06:56 PM

are the albums after Doolittle worth listening to?

cardboard adolescent 01-10-2007 06:59 PM

sure.

Sneer 01-13-2007 07:18 PM

bossanova is a great album, im personally not a huge fan of trompe le monde but it may float other boats.

sleepy jack 01-13-2007 09:49 PM

Doolittle<3<3

ItsRed 01-14-2007 10:41 AM

Even though I heard Doolittle a lot, Bossanova was the first I owned and I played it out pretty good.

Think 'Surfer Rosa' and 'Doolittle' are pretty neck in neck for fave though.

Also think the plural begs the "The," don't know if it's a grammatical question it just sounds awkward without it.

Sneer 01-14-2007 10:46 AM

due to the plurality of the word, it needs a "the" before it, it doesnt sound natural just "pixies". Yet knowing them, thats probably what the band intended.

Strummer521 01-14-2007 11:32 AM

grammatically speaking a plural word doesn't always need to be preceeded by "the" it depends on whether you're talking about a specific group, or just a plural representation of the object in general terms. If I made potatoes, and you were eating them, I'd ask you if you liked "the" potatoes. If I wondered whether I should bother making them, I'd just ask you if you liked potatoes (in general). Black Francis (or Frank Black now...) weren't referring to a specific group of pixies when selecting their name, so it's ok for them to say "pixies" as a reference to the mythological creature in general terms. Or, they could call themselves, "The Pixies", because by taking on the name, they become a group of pixies, in a sense. The same issue arises often with bands like Eagles and Talking Heads. I think it also serves as a way to separate true fans from casual listeners. Don't semantics make your head spin sometimes?

swim 01-14-2007 11:39 AM

I like you. You should post more.

I've personally come to like Surfer Rosa more than Doo Little.

Moi? Well, thanks. I may become something of a regular around here as time goes on.

tdoc210 01-14-2007 12:06 PM

Ma'hn i have never heard one pixies song..evar =(.

swim 01-14-2007 12:10 PM

I think you might like them. I don't know, maybe. They're sort of like Pavement, almost kind of. Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are a good place to start.

tdoc210 01-14-2007 12:15 PM

MM, ill probably like them, *heads to albumbase tommorow*

cardboard adolescent 01-14-2007 12:16 PM

How have you never heard "Where is my Mind?" Are you implying you've also never seen Fight Club?
