Well, the Arctic Monkeys are about a zillion times more talented than the Libs and Turner's a wittier, cleverer song-craftsman than Pete or Carl ever were. So you might start with them. Both their albums are good enough, with the 1st edging the 2nd in terms of quantity of v.good pop songs and the 2nd edging the 1st in terms of coherence and overall sound.

This lot predate The Libertines & in my opinion were a lot better. I blame the London based media. The Libertines were right on the NME's doorstep Hoggboy were like 200 miles away in Leeds. They never stood a chance.

Waterloo to Anywhere was sound but it doesn't hold a candle next to Up the Bracket. Pete was always the better of the two IMO, though I feel his lyrical genius is somewhat palliated in his work with Babyshambles. And the Libs s/t was v dissatisfactory in comparison to its predecessor. If I want my Pete fix, I'll turn to his solo tunes and UTB.
I kinda dig this album yeh it's got a very "retro" feel to it, reminds me of the Black Velvets. It's a pity they didn't break big because I know the public would LAP up them catchy riffs. |

Pete and Carl were kinda good together in that they could combine ideas and play into each other. It seems obvious that Carl was more responsible for the musical side of the Libs, and Pete probably the lyrics. Which shows in their solo careers: Dirty Pretty Things has music that's not far off the Libs in terms of basic sound (though is still complete crap) and terrible lyrics, and the Babyshambles, well, what can we say about Babyshambles? Sigh.
Pete would only be any good as the lyricist alongside a person who's at least a bit of a songsmith. As for Carl, I don't think he'll ever do anything good again. Alex Turner of the Arctics has more talent than both of them combined in one fingernail. |
