Helium -- Dirt of Luck
Err....was my last thread breaking any rules? Why was it deleted? I don't understand...
Anyway, in case it wasn't breaking any rules: Anyone heard the album Dirt of Luck? Been really enjoying it recently, my favourite tracks are Medusa, Comet #9 and Skeleton. The vocals be creepy! I'd post videos but I'm currently in China where youtube is banned. |

There should probably be a thread on Helium in general.
Although I haven't listened in over a decade I practically wore out the "Dirt of Luck" CD when it came out. (This was back when you had to go to stores and buy music if you wanted it immediately upon release). I think I like their previous EP "Pirate Prude" even more - which is why I was in the record store on, I think, the day of release of DOL. Lots of fairly legendary people played in Helium. Mary Timony also fronted the much underrated band, Autoclave, before Helium.

Hadn't heard of these guys before, quite like Medusa though, think I may have to go downloading!

Great album, The Magic City is almost on par - definitely worth listening to.
The likes of Helium, Silkworm etc were those second tier 90s American Indie Rock bands that never quite reached the levels of reverence enjoyed by, say, Pavement, Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh and GBV, but that's not a reflection on their quality, I think DOL is certainly up there with This is a Long Drive... and Wowee Zowee, but arguably falls short of the highest echelons of the era. Yeah I've been listening to Magic City recently and I didn't like it at first because it wasn't as dark or weird (weird to me anyway) as Dirt of Luck. But the mellower sound has been growing on me a lot, and it suits Timony's voice.
