Sounds very Madonna. Sub-par Madonna if I'm honest.

Yes, I had guessed that was what you were getting at. Trust me dude; no one wants to love this album more than I do, and I've given it fair chance (and will continue to do so, I'll be listening to the album stream online on the 10th). It's just not shaping up.

I listened to the album through once last night and thought it was rubbish.

Tried listening to it again today, got to about track 5, couldn't stand it and turned it off. This really isn't a good album IMO.

I listened to it the first time through today and really wasnt impressed either, but thought it had good some points. I really liked Exogenesis, even if I wasn't sure if it really fits well with the tone of the record. I also liked Uprising.

I then watched highlights of their homecoming gig on the BBC (it's running behind the red button at the minute) and was impressed with most of the new stuff they played there.

I am now listening to the record again and am 4 tracks in. I like the first 4 tracks and am enjoying the album a lot more the second time round so far. I just know that United States of Eurasia is coming though which is dreadful and I think it was the track after it too that I really didn't like at all the first time.

I'm not surprised about the negative reactions it has gotten here. It's different than anything they've done before. It has more good beats than it does guitar riffs, which I guess since Muse are known for their epic guitar tracks might upset people. The album's sound takes the big stadium anthems of Blackholes to an extreme, all of these songs were made for arenas. This one also makes a lot more use of Matt's piano than their previous albums. Which I don't mind because he's a just as amazing at piano as he is on guitar. I've listened through the album about 5 times now, and I have to say I think it's pretty great, not exactly great, but close. But definitely better than their last album and maybe better than Absolution. Their are a couple of tracks I see as filler like Guiding Light which is a typical ballad & MK ULTRA. I Belong to You has a nice sex appeal to it, but the french parts will probably turn some people off. The Exogenesis Symphony is the highlight of the album but my only complaint is that it's too short. The title track is a good catchy song, my guess is it will be their next single. I really like it's intro; the ominous snyth and thundering drums and the distance. Speaking of drums I think this album could be Dom's shining moment. They constantly demand attention throughout the album, Chris' bass is almost unnoticeable. Though most Muse fans may not like their new sound, I find it enjoyable.

Fav tracks:
Exogenesis Symphony
Undisclosed Desires
Resistance
Uprising
I Belong to You
USE
Unnatural Selection
MK Ultra
Guiding Light

This is starting to remind me of the debate about Kings Of Leon. Fans of their new stuff say that people don't appreciate their new direction, whilst old fans argue that it isn't a new direction, just a dumbing down.

I feel the same about The Resistance. I don't understand in what way it's a new direction at all. The songs still use the same Pop/Rock formula they always had with the same Metal and Classical flourishes they always had. Undisclosed Desires just takes Supermassive Black Hole a bit further (but is nowhere near as good), Unnatural Selection reminds me a lot of New Born, the ambient-esque intro to Resistance has the exact same tune as the breakdown of Citizen Erased, and there are several other riffs that sound very similar to old Muse tracks. The only part that's a noticeable step in a vaguely different direction is Exogenesis, and even then Muse always had a classical side to them, but now that that side to them has it's own 3 songs people think it's an evolution in their sound.

The impression I got from listening to it, is that they (presumably Bellamy) have come up with really simple and dull tunes and then glossed over them with very overblown production. Uprising is a good example of this - the same Glam Rock/Pop that Goldfrapp was making about 4 years ago. USoE sounds like a BH&R B-side, Guiding Light sounds so emotionally empty, and I Belong To You sounds like they wanted to try something new, but had no idea what - so they just plod around aimlessly.

I'm not 100% down on the album - Exogenesis parts 2 and 3 are nice (3 in particular), Undisclosed Desires is an okay little track (should've been the lead single in my opinion) and Unnatural Selection and MK Ultra are at least energetic and interesting, although they very much sound like Muse resting on their laurels and sticking rigidly to what they know (like the rest of the album really, but with better results).

Anyway, this album for me is easily their worst yet - but I'm no longer the massive Muse fan I once was so my opnion is pointless, so ignore all that.

It definitely makes more use of beats and piano than any of their other albums. I have always liked this side to them too, tracks like Endlessly and Space Dementia being among my favourites.

I'm still not too sure what to make of it but i'm on my third listen and even though I feel there is too much filler and not enough quality there are certainly highlights and tracks that will definitely fit very well into their live sets.

I will have an opinion that is more one way or the other in time but I guess for now im sitting on the fence a little.

As an interesting aside to this discussion, I never thought I'd see Kings of Leon and Muse compared... but the link was tangible and relevant to the argument... indeed it could be argued that both Muse and KOL have changed up their sound a bit for greater airplay / recognition... my argument of course is.... if the music still sounds great... at this point, who cares?
