I'm merely stating my opinion. I know prog, and I know muse isn't that, there are a lot of prog bands that I thoroughly dislike that I accept are prog.

EDIT: @ Jackhammer, I would never dispute that they are rock, but they shouldn't be in the prog/classic rock/psych forum.

You have the right to your opinion, but your opinion is not of the majority. I'm accepting them for this sub-forum. So put up or shut up.

First, let me say that I love Muse. I saw them in concert, nearly a year ago, and it is one of the greatest concerts I have EVER seen, and I've seen HUNDREDS of artists.
Do I consider them Prog? Not necessarily. Do they have elements of Prog? Definitely. Let's ask ourselves, what IS the definition of Prog? Progressive... yes, but it goes beyond that. It is music that doesn't confine itself to a particular sound. Do King Crimson and Pink Floyd sound the same? Absolutely not.
In listening to Muse, I would most compare them to Queen. Is it the high tenor vocals? The Classical piano? I don't know... all I can tell you, is that they defy proper classification. To me, that is VERY Prog.

Muse Fan: umm
Muse Fan: they are a space-rock band
ethan: then why state its a space-rock solo?
ethan: surely if they're space-rock it's implied the solo will be too?
Muse Fan: maybe if you weren't an indie fag, you would understand
ethan: what's there to understand?
Muse Fan: no point in explaining
ethan: why not?
Muse Fan: you wouldn't get it
ethan: why not?
ethan: announcing youd like to get a 15 minute solo in our album reeks of pretentious dream theater-esque crap to me
Muse Fan: what is wrong with dream theater?
ethan: LOL
Muse Fan: let me guess
Muse Fan: you hate the prog part
ethan: I hate the shitty music part
Muse Fan: why do indie fags hate prog music
Muse Fan: is it because it is technical and you only play 3 chords?
ethan: they hate prog? Battles was hyped as hell in indie circles last year.
Muse Fan: lol but you hate it
ethan: I don't hate prog, I like Krautrock and Pink Floyd
Muse Fan: i've never heard of Krautrock i bet they suck.
ethan: AND I BLOCK YOU

So without actually hearing the music or even knowing for a fact that there is going to be a 15 minute solo, you call them pretenious? Not to say this guy doesnt sound like a douchebag, but you egged him on to begin with. How is a 12 minute lyrical solo by Barnes in 'The Past is a Grotesque Animal' any different or less pretenious? I love OM, its just different strokes for different folks. Going around telling people things you havent heard before are pretenious and then trying to use your music knowledge to back up your crediablity sounds pretty pretenious to me...

On a lighter note any idea when that album is suppose to come out? I would love to get my hands on that ****. I agree with you on dream theater though, they suck. Im sure they have some great music hidden inbetween their ability to run through a scales in about .02 seconds, but I too have trouble finding any of it.

Disproving something is much harder than proving it, since I'd have to provide every single bit of music they've done. So it's simpler to ask you to provide any example where they've been exhibited as a progressive band.

Actully disproving something is much easier than proving it. I can easily disprove the standard model of physics, but even the top physicist in the world can't prove it. Same goes for quantum mechanics. To prove something you have to be exactly right, whereas disproving something you only have to find one instance in which its wrong. So NO your wrong.

As far as them not being classified as prog rock, go listen to 'knights of cydonia' and tell me what you classify that as. I agree they arn't exactly YES or GENESIS or PINK FLOYD, but give me a break; that is not traditional rock. If anything I would lean more towards like prog rock / art rock with metal influences or neo prog as defined on allmusic, but really we are just spliting hairs. They are just an awesome band, go see them live, I dare you!

way to go. respond to ancient-a$$ posts. Anyway, on the topic of Muse, how did they find their way into the classic rock/prog thread? Sure, they may well be prog, but I think they sufficiently qualify as a modern rock band to be perfectly suited to the main rock/metal forum - much like the mars volta or something.

dac 09-02-2008 11:20 AM

i do enjoy the occasional muse but bands such as the mars volta are certainly more progressive than muse

First of all, it was only a few months old post. Secondly, isn't that one of the best things about forums? To keep communication ongoing? You can go hang out in a chatroom, but I am gonna stick around here posting at my own pace. I do this crazy thing you see, whenever I havn't read a specific forum in a while.... I read everything that has been posted since the last time I posted. Call me crazy, but something someone said less than a six months ago (I know, really ancient) in a forum that people are still discussing, does seem somewhat relevant. I mean ****, it took you a whole week to come up with that.

yes, genesis, & king crimson are certainly more progressive than the mars volta, but that doesnt mean we should stop calling the mars volta prog does it?

dac 09-02-2008 06:43 PM

no but the thing is muse is in the prog forum and the mars volta is in alternative

sweet_nothing 09-02-2008 06:51 PM

I'm interested in Muse because they are often compared to Radiohead, so what's a good Muse album to start with?

joyboyo53 09-02-2008 07:30 PM

I like to start from the beginning whenenver I try and listen to a band that has been suggested to me. If you want something that might hook you and then go back, then get Black Holes and Revelations.
