I'd prefer to avoid the whole genre discussion, but seeing as it's relevant to the section in which this thread belongs... I consider Muse progressive rock. Accessible prog rock, prog rock which also appeals to indie/alt fans, but prog rock nonetheless. So I'll leave them here.

Yeah, I've always seen them as prog rock too. They're considered to be part of the whole "New Prog" thing apparently. Same goes for Coheed & Cambria and Pure Reason Revolution. I kinda understand that though - the prog of today is very different to older prog, but in nature it's prog nonetheless.

I guess I don't see the prog connection.

And Knights of Cydonia kicked my ass on Guitar Hero III earlier.

Oh? Why's that? They're quite clearly a rock band, firmly on the prog/art rock side of things, and are signed to Warner Bros to boot. Indie my a$$.

Farfisa 02-11-2008 05:17 AM

i always took them as an alt or indie band........idk why i just did...

.Tom. 02-11-2008 05:30 AM

I think it's a fair view, to be honest. Maybe more on the alt side than the indie side though.

this is stupid..........it could be either alt. or prog rock

Rainard Jalen 02-11-2008 06:55 AM

lol. and another genre argument which I, with my big mouth, stumble into.

To restate what I meant more politely, I don't really see Muse legitimately fitting in the alt/indie arena. I say that because alt/indie music is generally understood to be the type of experimental rock that derives from punk aesthetics, principles, standards, and values. In that sense, it is supposed to be an antithesis of sorts to prog and "art rock" in their traditional senses. Muse are obviously a prog band.

Comus 02-11-2008 06:59 AM

Muse goes under the "****" genre imho.
