I don't think so myself, there are so many different styles inside of indie that I think its just become a way of distinguishing an underground band form a mainstream one

I really don't think production quality has anything to do with being indie or not. Artists can have great-sounding music production and still be indie artists. Also you wouldn't call blues or metal artists that have low-quality production 'indie' would you?
