^ Really? Let England Shake, though different from her prior work, is the last brilliant thing she's done imo.

jadis 06-18-2021 08:07 PM

I'm sure it has its merits, just not ones I'm sensible to... not an album I enjoy, that pulls me in... I remember an overall impression of acoustic earnestness, which is not my thing.

Whereas Uh Huh Her had Eff You and a couple of other snippets I really enjoyed even though it's not a great album.

SGR 06-18-2021 08:14 PM

Uh Huh Her is def underrated. What a badass opening song.

jadis 06-18-2021 09:39 PM

Yeah I should listen to it again

Marie Monday 06-19-2021 03:36 AM

Rid Of Me is brilliant but for some reason I never listened to her other albums. I'm gonna set that right by making this a PJ Harvey day

For real? Check out Stories From the City, Stories From The Sea, and my personal fav PJ album, To Bring You My Love

Yeah it's surprising, considering she fits well into the kind of music I'm into. I'm starting out by revisiting Rid Of Me after quite a long time, and I suddenly recognised what kept me back: it's produced by Steve Albini. This may fit into the unpopular music opinion thread, but I'm not a fan. His production always sounds the same (how easily I recognised it says enough) in a metallic way which is crisp at best and tin can-like at worst and in itself that's not a bad thing I guess, it's just not for me. The music itself is still brilliant in spite of that, but I don't think there's any Albini album I don't at least have slightly mixed feeling about

I listened to both Stories From the City, Stories From The Sea and To Bring You My Love: I kind of like both and I love some songs, but I miss the punkishness of Rid Of Me. I feel like these are albums that I have to get used to in order to appreciate them fully

This is me every time I listen to any other one of her albums.

jadis 06-19-2021 04:01 PM

Yes, that the one for me as well - though the others have lots of great music, so I don't want to say that it's all weak tea by comparison, even if it sometimes feels like it.

Love the Albini production more than I could possible say. Abrasive!

Yeah I'll do the same, as actually, I don't think I ever listened to an album of hers. One of those names you just know but for some reason never felt the need to check out.

Ok well I had my PJ Harvey day, went through her albums from Dry to about half of Uh huh her. The first few albums seemed like standard early 90s alternative rock music, which was a bit of a surprise since I thought she was a bit more "out there". Things got a bit more interesting for me after that but I have to say that none of the songs I heard grabbed my attention. It's pleasant music but there were no memorable hooks or anything else to really draw me in. So I guess my initial instincts were right, it's just not for me.

jadis 06-21-2021 05:43 PM

When a song's got a "hook", that's how you know you're in for a treat.

You went from Dry to Uh Huh Her and didn't find any memorable hooks? Really?

adidasss 08-26-2021 09:17 PM

Not really. To each their own I guess. Who knows how our brains are wired. Mine just didn't pick up anything to obsess over.

Okay, last ditch effort, here's one more sample of PJ Harvey post Uh Huh Her. If you don't like this one, then it is probably a lost cause. And I feel for the loss.

Which one is it? The video is unavailable for me.

rubber soul 08-27-2021 05:48 AM

It's off Let England Shake, one of her more recent albums. Also one of her best.

Man, I hate the Youtube country restrictions.

It's "The Words that Maketh Murder", try this link:

Sorry, forgot to answer, gave it a try, didn't work for me. She seems a bit like a female Nick Cave, and, while I'm yet to delve deeper into his discography, I anticipate I will have a similar reaction.
