Newest Indie Trends That Suck.

My Vote Goes To The Horrible, Surfer-esque, Californian homage, conjuring images of carefree summer slew of bands. Wavves and The Drums being a couple of the worst. Ive seen live videos of both of those bands and they kind of embarrassing.

glastonelle 07-02-2010 07:35 PM

Tbh, I dont mind The Drums. But I dont know any of the other bands you've listed.

Charlemagne 07-02-2010 09:10 PM

I actually really like the surfer-esque, California garage influenced stuff. Best Coast is awesome, as is Real Estate, Girls, and Surfer Blood. I couldn't agree more about Wavves though they are pretty awful.

keith! 07-02-2010 11:02 PM

I've never listened to Best Coast but I've been told to check em out.

I like Real Estate, Wavves and Surfer Blood. I find Girls super boring though. Their album only had 3 songs I actually liked. Maybe I went in with to high of expectations, but I was extremely disappointed.

That's probably my biggest gripe with the scene right now, too. They've honestly just found an image and plastered their name to it, so that they could temporarily avoid the realization that they have to actually write good music. Wavves is getting better, but that isn't saying much...

indienerd 07-03-2010 10:24 AM

For me, it's gotta be the noise rock genre that getting pushed down people's throats. I don't mind the "Cali surfer bro" type of image and really do agree with Charlemagne on Best Coast and Surfer Blood, but when the melodies are hidden behind all the fuzz and static like Wavves, No Age, and HEALTH, I really can't seem to get into it. I guess I'm just not punk enough.

TheCunningStunt 07-03-2010 10:35 AM

I like Girls, Wavves, Surfer Blood and The Drums. So the California surfer esque thing I don't mine. I especially like Girls, their album was brilliant. Can't wait for a follow up. The most annoying Indie trend at the moment, especially round here is the fashion - twats that shop in Topman just be Indie and cool even though they look like complete cocks in their skinny jeans and cardigans.

FaSho 07-03-2010 10:37 AM

Girls are so much better then Surfer Blood.

Well, yeah. I don't think anyone could argue that. Girls are a far better band than Surfer Blood.

Alfred 07-03-2010 11:02 AM

I like Surfer Blood, Wavves is okay.

One of those sentences you'll only ever come across on a music forum - gotta love 'em :D

Anyway, back to whatever it was I was doing...

Both Girls and Surfer Blood are f*cking great. Album was one of the best albums of 2009 and Astro Coast is one of the best albums of 2010 so far.

I used to listen to Wavves for a while around this time last year after Wavvves was released but i got sick of that album pretty quick. I'm not really too bothered to try out their new one despite the positiveness towards it.

The Drums are great, and i don't care what anyone else thinks. They write good memorable pop songs and i have them on rotation quite a lot.

Regarding recent indie trends that suck i agree with TheCunningStunt about Topshop 'indie' fashion, cardigans and also those t-shirts with deep v-necks just look plain stupid.

TheCunningStunt 07-03-2010 04:40 PM

You should really check out Wavves new album. I think they're a surprisingly good band, even though there's a lot of hate towards them they produce great lo-fi garage pop songs. The new album sounds less pretentious because it has a better production to it, Wavvves sounded like it was trying too hard.

Glad you agree, I really don't get the Topman appeal. Awful shop, shit clothes. Wearing plimsolls in primary school was an embarrassment, now it's fashion. I hate them plad shirts as well. But cardigans and skinnies take the piss.

I might investigate the new album sometime soon. I only heard the title track and it didn't sound like anything special.

I hate really colourful plimsolls they just look ridiculous. I like plaid shirts though, although i don't wear them in a buttoned-up indie sort of way. They look great worn over a band t-shirt in a more grunge way.

TheCunningStunt 07-03-2010 04:55 PM

The title track I liked, it was a great start to the album. Maybe you'll think it's forgettable, but I've been listening to it a lot lately. These can be my guilty pleasure band, I've never really had one of them before.

I wouldn't be seen dead in the plad shirt combined with band t, I think some people look like complete dicks wearing that. Especially people in their mid to late 20s that still have long hair and refuse to grow up. Cringeworthy.

It always reminds me of the 90s as well when I see it.

Haha, I'll let you off for it. :D as long as you get it sorted when you're in your 30s ;)

GravitySlips 07-03-2010 05:14 PM

I quite liked Real Estate's album, although it's nothing that special. A pleasant listen though. Wavves is OK.

I quite like Girls' album, I saw them live last November I think it was and it was pretty good, although I was really stoned at the gig... but it was awesome at the time. One of the songs on their album is quite the ripoff of Sonic Youth's Mote - but fair enough, I still dig it.

deadbeatsummah 07-05-2010 09:30 AM

i just listen to waaves' latest effort and i really enjoy it much more so than "so bored". i also love girls and the drums. i guess i enjoy the lazy, surfer music.

Oh man, I saw Wavves play here in Toronto last month because EVERYBODY was talking about them. I did not see what all the hype was about. They were awful. The songs sucked, the sound was dismal and the band had zero chemistry on stage. It was dreadful. I don't know what the hype is about.

My most hated Indie trend is Hipsters drinking PBR beer. It's not ironic, it's not cool, it's just crappy beer!

niccar113 07-11-2010 10:08 AM

word on the PBR. i'll drink it, because as far as dirt-cheap beers go, its better than keystone, natty, or milwaukee's. (but yeah, thats not saying much, and it is definitely not good beer.)
as far as indie trends in music go, im getting kind of sick of all these LA beatmakers putting out albums of 10-12 instrumental songs made on Logic Pro. Granted there are some good ones- Michal Menert, Baths, Pretty Lights.. but most of these guys are just riding the hype train they're getting from electro blogs that love that ****, taking advantage of how easy it is to create a mediocre beat that bros who read GoodMusicAllDay will blaze to and regard 'dank.'

I think it's hilarious that PBR has become some kind of hipster thing these days. I've been drinking it and Old Style for ages simply because they're cheap and taste okay. I remember actually getting teased by hipster type friends of mine in the past for not drinking microbrews like all of them. Now I'm stylish apparently.

Well, at least you've got the hipster attitude down haha. "I started doing it BEFORE everybody else."

Odyshape 07-12-2010 04:04 AM

I hate the extreme sarcasm. I swear 95% of the things that come out of my hipster friends mouths are sarcastic, its not clever its ****ing annoying.

agreed. it's like the whole 'irony' scene that still hasn't died yet.

thank you hipsters for celebrating the worse the 80s had to offer! that's SO awesome!

whether or not you're wearing dayglo legwarmers, cutoff jean shorts, a hypercolour shirt, a hair scrunchie, too much mousse, oversized sunglasses, and blasting Journey as a joke or an homage doesn't change the fact that you still look and sound like a piece of technicolour vomit.

TheCunningStunt 07-12-2010 07:24 AM

I'm so thankful 'hipsters' are an American invention, they sound fucking awful.

I'm sure there's a British equivalent.

Indiefags, but they aren't anywhere near as bad as these Hipster folk. Indie fags just wear skinny jeans, cardigans and listen to really average Indie bands.. Not really that annoying.

I don't think there is any possible way I could go on about this subject while staying within the 10000 character limit.

i'm kinda hating the whole "low-fi folk rock" movement going on. i don't see what's so special about it. sure, it's low-fi, but only a few bands can truly pull it off without being annoying. and plus half of the songs are super bland.

TheCunningStunt 07-14-2010 02:41 PM

Out of every Genre/movement/whatever you get a few bands that can pull it off and are actually good and then you get a few bands that are just bland and boring. What's the problem?

meh, it's just that only one or two acts can pull off a lo-fi sound.
the rest are quite bland and all pretty much sound the same sometimes.

One or two acts can pull off a certain production? Have a word. It's just like any genre, you get a few good ones and a few that use the lo-fi to blanket their lack of talent. Lo-fi is a great production, as long as the music actually has some substance.

I think the most irritating indie trend I can remember was the whole dadrock thing that started in the mid 90s & still seems to be around.

The kind of people who hero worship awful shit like Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene , Kaiser Chiefs & Cast and who seem to think Paul Weller is God.
They remind me of the British equivalent of America's Pearl Jam / Grunge fanboys

We've had a fair few of them come through here (And leave again, thank God) I think Mirrorball was the last.

homesick.alien 07-15-2010 11:38 PM

I was into that kinda stuff for a couple of weeks, then got bored of it real quick. I also find that music bland and all sounding the same. Again, some bands are good (The Acorn, Antlers), but the majority of the music still sounds boring and not special. Lo-fi's hard to pull off imo.

I don't like this whole 'indie-pop' thing either, like Band Of Horses, The Format, etc.
