How to Destroy Angels
So yesterday I was browsing through and I saw that Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) has a new band called, How to Destroy Angels. He is collaborating with his wife Mariqueen Maandig (West Indian Girl) and Atticus Ross, they just released a promo single called "A Drowning." I was a little sad when I first heard Trent was putting NIN on an indefinite hiatus, but was pretty happy to hear this song. And there are plans to release a 6 song EP sometime in the summer!

I do like that track, more than I expected I would.
Especially since I've always liked Trent's instrumentation, but was never that big a fan of him as a singer. Having her sing that makes it come off as a lot more chilled-out than I think it might be if he did, and I like chilled-out, so I am intrigued by this project. |
Yeah, having Mariqueen sing was a bit of suprise to me, but a good one.

The viral clips sounded pretty interesting, even though they had the distinct NIN sound and didn't seem too different.
And I like the idea of Trent putting out some work on which he doesn't sing. But I'm generally not a fan of female vocals, and that's especially true with electronic music especially if it's dreamy/ethereal...I just don't dig that stuff at all. They need to add some distortion, effects, something so that the voice is more of an instrument or texture in the music, and not just singing. But that's not going to happen, so I likely won't be into this too much, unless the singing is kept to a minimum, which I doubt will happen. |

With every release I come to like this band more, the first ep was o.k. but forgettable, the second e.p. was about the same-but had 2 really good songs, and the first single off of their new full length is probably the best thing trent has done since Ghosts.
the video that goes with it is awesome but the only place it's up is at npr(I'm guessing they have an exclusive) trent reznor new band new song new video still terrifying |
Wow, so it's not just about static electro songs, cool as you want but boring, this is great!

Totally - HTDA has been really interesting to watch progress. "How Long" has been sticking in my head lately.

While I admire Trent's work as NIN, I wouldn't call my self a fan, I don't own any NIN albums and I feel that having been around so long, NIN are losing the shock element that made them such a ground breaking act.
How to Destroy Angels on the other Hand is a totally different proposition. I have both releases and I have to say the Chemistry between the two is amazing. I really like the interplay between the two styles of vocals and it is interesting to see Trent showing a more gentle side. At the same time this new direction has not diminished the intensity of the music. There is an underlying darkness to many of the tracks that leaves me in no doubt that this new project is one to be taken very seriously. If they ever tour here, I will certainly go and see them. |
Love the sound.. I can't believe I haven't heard of this sooner. Thanks for sharing.
