Bitter Ruin
Fresh duo from UK. Georgia on vocals and Ben on guitar/vocals. I am horrible at describing music, so I will let their myspace speak for them.
Bitter Ruin Myspace If you are a fan of Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Dresden Dolls, or something like that, you will probably enjoy Bitter Ruin. Also, if you like them and are from Michigan, please join the Michigan street team on facebook. Bitter Ruin Michigan street team They recently toured with Amanda Palmer for three or four gigs because of the ash cloud(Amanda's original support couldn't fly to UK) and because many people couldn't make it, they did a webcast of a few of the concerts. This is one duo that sounds just as good live as they do recorded, which is refreshing. And they put on an entertaining show.

I think they fit under the "dark cabaret" moniker quite nicely. I actually grabbed their album on Monday after a friend recommended it to me but I have not had a chance to give it a proper listen. All I know is that they have a full LP coming out very soon and that they're raising some eyebrows among some music critics and fans.
The lyrics are where the band really stand out, a brooding mixture of dark and delightfully evil lyrics delivered in a humorous fashion. Fans of gallows humor will love this group, here's a few examples: I wanted to put myself in your position to figure you out So I took a chainsaw to my skull and extracted my brain out -"Outrageous" I’m going to be a murderer I can claim to see the future and I’m a greedy girl who gorges on the grasp end of a grudge And I won’t budge ‘cause -"I'm Going To Be A Murderer" Don’t pretend you’re drunk that whisky’s down your dress And I know those pills are aspirin for your head An obvious fact ‘cause if they weren’t bitch you’d be dead Well I’m sick of this now, you’ve crossed the line - "Trust" |

I do love their lyrics, and their performance. But what I like the most is that they come across as real people. I found them six or seven months ago and left a comment on their myspace page. They commented back on my page and then we started exchanging messages and I agreed to set up a Michigan fan page for them. Might be because I just caught them early. I'm sure now that they are touring with Amanda Palmer and getting increasing recognition that they will probably not have time for stuff like that. But I respect them speaking directly to their fans on an individual basis.

Just picked up their LP off Amazon and it is just what I was hoping for. Not much has changed from their earlier EP but the fact that it's not just that with a few more songs is a definite plus. The production is slick and the lyrics are just so well written and delivered that it's hard to find anything to complain about. The chemistry between Ben and Georgia is just amazing and they compliment each other so well. I would really like to see them live because I have a feeling it would be a show really worth remembering, and I've seen some pretty intense shows before.
