sterolab are nice/happy/french style of yo la tengo... more lush than guitars.
Galaxie 500, Sparklehorse, Grandaddy are all great - grandaddy being one of my fav bans ever - check them out! yo la tengo do indeed cover quite a few styles, from sonic youth type guitar music, to Low type slow songs to camera obscura twee.... :) one of the reasons they are so great is their range i think :) |
hey guys, i used to listen to a lot of this stuff but seemed to have lost my way. I really like arctic monkeys, franz ferdinand, the strokes, older razorlight. Any recommendations are welcome. The only thing i don't like are singers with high or super low voices. I've been reading up and want to experience some of the older, purer stuff. Thanks

looking for modern indie influences
I've only been exposed to bands like arctic monkeys, franz ferdinand, the kooks and the strokes. I like those bands a lot, but from what I've read on the forum there's a lot more to learn. I'm not a fan of the folk-ish songs, conceptual and slow, or hard rock. The farthest away I've gone and still liked is Kasabaian. So, who influenced these bands? Anyone I should look for? Thanks

I'm trying to get into Beck. (I think alternative is the right place for him, but it's hard to tell.)
I've heard Midnight Virtues and Odelay, I'm just wondering what his 5 best albums are. First being the best 5th being the 5th best. If anyone could give me any insight I'd appreciate it. :) |
Mutations>Sea Change>One Foot In The Grace>Guero>Modern Guilt
I'd also get Stray Blues which is a B-side collection. |
Guero and Modern Guilt are excellent. I'm not really familiar with his older stuff
|
The best Beck album to start with is probably Odelay. It's a fairly accessible album with some really fantastic tunes, it'll give you a great idea of what Beck's all about. He's made some really different sounding albums over the years, his early lo-fi blues stuff on Golden Feelings is a bit more inaccessible, while he even ventured into camp pop music on Midnite Vultures. Sea Change is a superb album for wallowing in sorrow, his most mellow and depressing album.
My personal Beck top 5: 1. Sea Change 2. Odelay 3. Modern Guilt 4. Mutations 5. Guero |
I already like Midnight Virtues and Odelay. Odelay was the first one I listened to and like you say, nice and easy on the ears.
From what people have said - Mutations, Sea Change or Modern Guilt seem to be the contenders for my 3rd Beck album. Which is the most accessible would you say? |
Depends on your taste.
You like acoustic stuff=Sea Change You like straightforward indie=Mutations You like straightforward Beck=Modern Guilt |
