How about some good afro-pop inspired tunes? I enjoy Vampire Weekend, Paul Simon, Fool's Gold, and most recently Tune-Yards.
Anything along those lines would be great. I've done searches and VW is the usual I find. They can't be that original. Maybe something caribbean/calypso inspired? On second thought, maybe i shouldn't limit myself here. Any *world* music inspired indie pop will fit the bill. Middle eastern, lo-fi, etc.

Dexter Strangeways - 'Fiercely Independent'
North London's Alternative Ballad Singer, Dexter Strangeways' music is a contemporary statement that draws parallels with the work of Scott walker, Dean Martin and David Lynch.
His debut single "Bodies", is a sinisterly swoon-some 21st Century ballad, music noir at it's finest. listen to the newly recorded single "Bodies" and other Strangeways' demos soundcloud. A review of the single would be hugely appreciated. Thanks |

The only thing I've really found, which is nothing new, is the Talking Heads. I love this one:
