Very 'safe' (in listing well known albums) lists. I suppose when someone says essential people think it must be famous singers or groups who have received a lot of praise generally.

If you are introducing someone to a genre, majority of the time you do go with safe choices to help ease them into it which are generally the most popular ones or critically acclaimed ones.

Yeh, although they can also have a tendency to be overrated. But what really do we mean by 'essential' here? Some of these albums may be essential to some people but not to others. Or do we really mean '5 Famous Indie Albums'.

the ones that are tried and tested are usually the ones that stand the test of time

And those that haven't been tried and tested much don't stand the test of time? No, I think it is more about what people know best and that tends to be famous stuff as that is what they have heard first and so have known longest (or just know at all), then they pass those names on to the next generation and so on.
