modest mouse - lonesome crowded west
neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
cursive - domestica

there are plenty of others, top 5 or essential 5 makes this hard..
but these are albums that i have found myself returning to numerous times throughout the years along with so many others.

^ Great list! Replace ITAOTS with On Avery Island and it would be even better!

thanks, but like i said there are others.. on avery island being one of them... a lot being albums i consider to be indie or at least influential when it comes to modern indie rock... television-marquee moon, toadies-rubberneck, anything by the pixies and nirvana...

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
The Velvet Underground - Self Titled
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Pixies - Come all you pilgrams EP
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

Essential recordings, for me anyway. The first two are not necessarly indie but they definatly helped start the foundation for the bands to come.
