modest mouse is my favorite band hands down. lonesome crowded west is my favorite album by far. they're not sell outs. period. and they own all. the new cd was mediocre.. but still aight..
|
amen. i dont think that good news is a mediocre album at all. ROLLING STONE called it the best album theyve heard in 3 months. mm has been around for more than a decade and just because they got a good flow for float on doesnt institute selling out. people always say that bands sell out...some truly do...but others stay true.
|
I consider it selling out when a band bitches about other bands "selling out" by signing with a big record label, then do it themselves. The were all "indie for life." Then they sigend with epic, which was a total hypocratic act to their attitude. They basically shot themselves in the foot with their prior statements. The only thing I can constitute for their behavior is possibly they lost that "indie for life" attitude and matured and decided big labels aren't that bad.

modest mouse- my take.
modest mouse has released quite a few albums over 10+ years. only since 2001 have they been with epic records. unfortunately people have been calling mm sellouts because of the popularity of float on. Heres my say: people are always going to say bands sell out. no matter what. and people have been saying they've sold out only because of float on. theyve released 2-3 records with epic and no one cared before good news. modest mouse still makes damn good music and i dont think any one is in a position to contest that. rolling stone released an article about them saying good news was the best CD they've heard in 3 months. so put up or shut up.

I think they are sellouts because in the late 90's, they constantly bitched about how other bands that sign with big labels are sellouts, and how they weren't going to do that, and how 'indie' they were. Then they turned around and stepped on their own feet by doing exactly what they bitched about. This seems to be a favorite topic with you collapse, because we have sdebated this many times.
You should post that article that you are referring to. |
If a band you like has a popular song and the "teenies" catch on, you will be called a sellout. It doesn't matter. Just be happy with the music you like, and don't worry too much about other people's opinions.
|
It's not that other people's opinions matter...it's that when a band becomes popular...they start to play bigger venues. They start to play at places that have balconies or where you have to sit on the lawn...and ticket prices sky rocket. I just saw Modest Mouse this past weekend and paid $35 (including ticket fees to seem them) I saw them four years ago, and paid $10..no fees. That's a huge difference. Merchandise also gets more expensive. And when I saw them last Saturday...when they played Float On, everyone around me started to freak out and dance and sing along. But for every other song, I think it was about one other person besides myself that was dancing and singing along to every song played. So that is what matters. Not that everyone likes it too...they just ruin it for the people that liked them all along.

....Do you realize how little they make off CD's? Making people pay to go see the concerts is practically all the revenue that artists get. $35 isn't that much, especially since you (or most everyone) doesn't even pay to get the music on an album.

your s/n is thrice. modest mouse is still sincere about their music and will continue to be when this little fad from them dies down. |
