Yeah, 'The World At Large' is a great tune and thusly is the first real song on the album. 'Interlude (Milo)' is exactly what it's called, an interlude. You could make the argument that just about any interlude is "filler". As for 'This Devil's Workday', it's obviously unique, but I thought that's what Modest Mouse fans want? That song clearly paints a different picture than the status quo that Good News is a mainstream album...

Yes, harsh words for a band I used to love. As I've said before, what it comes down to for me is a loss of sincerity in the sound.

I heard King Rat yesterday from "No ones first, and you're next" and it was probably the best thing I've heard in months.
Modest Mouse is displaying a brilliant understanding of what sounds to be like Talking Heads and Tom Waits together. And King Rat has displayed that message again - quirky grooves and ambient raw instrumentation. I've checked out the rest of the album but nothing is striking me quite as much. Ultimately it cuts to the depths of what I really like about music. All the instrumentation sounds like paint sloppily tossed at the canvas, but represents elements of the life, or the characteristics of the tumultuous characters created in the songs. The world has created some natural beauty out there, and there are times when I would recant such a statement, but what will win me over more often than the highest mountains or the most beautiful forests is the tiny aberrations in civilized society, and the music that attempts to interpret those aberrations and the confusion around them through dissonant, jarring music. Modest Mouse is becoming one of the finest artists in the 21st century. King Rat does nothing to disprove this.

They seem to be on a downturn? How so? I think their on the biggest upswing of their career and this isn't even a proper album.

The other thing is I generally love anything with horns. And I have to ask, because its my nature, but do you think you don't like the album or the critical acclaim because Good News is when they blew up by exponential figures. I'm always weary about things like that. To me the best thing about Good News... was not "Float On" but "Bukowski" and similalry with Ship Sank... not "Dashboard" but "March into the Sea" or "Missed the Boat."

I concur those are better, but my faves from those albums are: Bury Me With It, The View, Satin In A Coffin / Florida, Missed The Boat, and People As Places As People. Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands FYI.
