Afghan Whigs
Anybody familiar with the Afghan Whigs? I've really been digging them lately, and I want to find something that's similar to them. Last.fm isn't very helpful - all they give me is other Greg Dulli side projects. Does anybody know anything that has a similar sort of controlled, layered noisy-ness?

This is someone I've been meaning to check out for quite a while but for some reason still haven't gotten around to. I think I'll give them a shot now; I'll let you know what I think and if I know anything that would be similar.

Gentlemen and 1965 are superb.
|
Oh yeah forgot I posted in here. Gentlemen's the album I listened to, it was pretty good. I'm not sure what would sound quite like them... you could try the Boo Radleys, they have their moments but their songs are often a lot poppier so I'm not so sure.

Gentlemen is goddamn awesome.

Man, I haven't heard Gentlemen in so many years. I remember liking it - and some of my friends were absolutely crazy over it (others thought it was alternative rock radio bullshit). I'll have to check out that album again someday.

That gutter twins album with Mark Lanegan was absolute quality too.

Gentlemen and 1965 are awesome.

I love Gentlemen, it's probably one of the best albums to listen to after a break-up. It's a really sad, emotional, epic album. And who doesn't admit to feeling a bit teary-eyed while listening to this...
Classic |
Gentlemen is such amazing album, one of the better "grunge" bands I find. They're very underrated but Gentlemen is probably one of the best 90s albums. So emotional.
|
I'm surprised I hadn't listened to this band until they released the Lollapalooza lineup. They're from Cincinnati and from what I'm gathering are essentially the Alkaline Trio of early 90s alternative rock. Really digging the stuff on Gentlemen and their first album...
|
I think their best work is 1965.
An album that's really hard to pigeon-hole, taking influences from jazz, r'n'b and soul amongst others. In particular the songs 'John The Baptist' 'City Soleil' and '66' |
One of the most overrated bands of the 1990s, they only had one good album anyway and that was Gentlemen, Greg Dulli certainly wasn't a lead vocalist.
|
The only thing I agree with you on is that Gentlemen is their best album. But Congregation and 1965 are both fucking great too.
