Jeff Buckley has never been an 'indie' artist. He`s always been a singer songwriter on a major label.

I`d say Billy Childish , I can`t think of too many people who have put out over 100 albums since 1976.

I`d add Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy & Nick Cave to this too

Statistics(Jade Tree Records) I have listened to a few of his songs for a while now, and I was unaware that it was a solo artist until I read the Statistics bio on Jade Tree! I thought wow...he does a good job.

he may not be indie but hes definetly alternative. he wasnt a main stream pop icon was he. so i think he falls into this category.

But there have always been singer songwriters around just as there have always been pop artists , I don`t think there`s anything 'alternative' about that.He made albums with his own material & covers for a major label in the same way that Bob Dylan did 30 - 40 years earlier , does that make Bob Dylan 'alternative' too?

I just think if you are going to make a thread like this at least leave out the more well known people for once & actually have someone who has recorded albums for independent labels.

Hmm... so many good ones...

Jim O'rourke is my personal choice
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Elliott Smith
Nick Cave
Morrissey (I know the Smiths were kinda poppy back then but wouldn't say Moz really fits in with the pop of today)
Chan Marshall
Conor Oberst

Bobsta 01-16-2005 10:27 AM

Graham Coxon is a really good solo artist. Mind you, he might be in Blur soon.

Jim O' Rourke, natch.

Since when was Nick Cave a solo artist?!

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-24-2005 07:21 PM

Last I checked it was Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds , Not Nick Cave fronting a band called The Bad Seeds.

Bruce Springsteen had the E Street Band , Cliff Richard had the Shadows , John Lennon had the Plastic Ono Band , Buddy Holly had the Crickets , Joe Strummer had the Mescaleros.Elvis Costello had the Attractions , Prince had the NPG.

Does that mean they are not solo artists too?

RedEye 01-25-2005 07:17 AM

If you like. What's in a name? Old Nick and the Bad Seeds write their songs as a band.

RedEye 01-25-2005 07:23 AM

PS. I'm talking bollocks but the line gets blurred dunnit?

The Supremes >> Diana Ross & the Supremes >> Diana Ross

Heh. Egoes realigning themselves.

:whythis:

This argument is dumb, but yeah i'd say bob dylan is alt. I mean, he was original, no one had his sound, today too many people aren't jacking it so, I'd give him alt status.

Ill say Tom Waits. He lords over the indie world like grizzled old grandfather who can still kick all his kids asses.

i see alternative as anything that cannot be typecast in the conventional genre brackets, regardless of success

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-30-2005 03:41 PM

I was under the impression 'alternative' meant alternative to the mainstream.

Anyway I don`t know why I`m argueing I think it`s one of the dumbest terms ever.

No one argued against Nirvana being alternaitve, they sell huge.

:pimp:

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-04-2005 12:34 AM

Yeah but they started on an indie label.

Besides I don`t use the phrase 'Alternative',when I describe a band to someone.
I like to actually give them an idea of what something sounds like, so it doesn`t matter
