I like the album myself. Undemanding toe tapping stuff. Mis-takes and Missing Beats are standouts so far. I played it a couple of times at work so I'm quite familiar with it.

I feel the same way completely. as well as a Fender Rhodes. Check out Stanton Moore's new album "III" for some great instrumental organ funk.

The Charlatans

Alrite, I have been meaning to do a thread on this band for a long time. I think they are massively underrated & the thing that impresses me the most about them is how they change their sound on practically every single album. I first got 'Some Friendly' then the Oasis-esque 'Tellin' Stories' & the most recent one I got was 'Simpatico' which i thought was excellent embracing funk & r&b styles on songs such as 'NYC'. I have still to get their 'You Cross My path' album but for some reason have a psychic notion that I aint gonna like it, which is strange considering their one of my favourite bands...

Anyway heres a list of all the album Ive got along with the best tracks:

Some Friendly (1990)- Fav Tracks- White Shirt, Your Not Very Well, Sproston Green, The Only One I Know, Opportunity, Then.

Between 10th & 11th- (1992)- Fav Tracks- I Dont Want To See The Sights, Ignition, The End Of Everything, Weirdo, Chewing Gum Weekend.

Up To Our Hips (1994)- Fav Tracks- Cant Get Out Of Bed (a song I can greatly relate to), I Never Want An Easy Life..., Jesus Hairdo, Patrol, Up To Our Hips.

The Charlatans (1995)- Fav Tracks- Just Lookin', Just When Your Thinking Things Over, Crashin' In, Nine Acre Court.

Tellin' Stories (1997)- Fav Tracks- With No Shoes, North Country Boy, Tellin' Stories, One To Another, Your A Big Girl Now, How High, Area 51.

Us & Us Only (1999)- Fav Tracks- Forever, Impossible, Good Witch/Bad Witch, My Beautiful Friend, The Blonde Waltz.

Wonderland (2001)- Fav Tracks- Love Is The Key, Judas, Your So Pretty- We're So Pretty, A Man Needs To Be Told, The Bell & The Butterfly.

Up At The Lake (2004)- Fav Tracks- Up At The Lake, Feel The Pressure, Cry Yourself To Sleep, High Up Your Tree.

Simpatico (2006)- Fav Tracks- Blackened Blue Eyes, NYC, Dead Mans Eye, City Of The Dead, The Architect, When The Lights Go Out In London.. the list is endless.

Dont have this album yet so cant comment.

I also have their B-Sides album which to be honest, Ive never even bothered to listen to yet & a live album which I dont like.

My favourite most recent album is probably Simpatico, just because of the array of different styles explored on the album, from funk & r&b on songs like 'NYC' to touches of reggae on 'The Lights Go Out In London'. Fantastic album, I recommend to anyone who is looking to get into this band. But my all time favourite has to be 'Between 10th & 11th', it took me a long time to give it the time of day with the lackluster cover of a bunch of bananas ultimately putting me off. But really a great album & I love 'I Dont Want To See The Sights'.

I would say their weakest album is 'Up At The Lake' as I only really like the first 3 or 4 tracks & feel that everything pales in comparison to the first (title) track which kickstarts the album. Quite often if I put this album on, I just have track 1 on repeat lol.

EDIT: I will post more on this band (maybe some videos & talk more on the albums) later as Im off to work soon.

I think a lot of people love their whole catalogue - and I'm happy for the band but, for me, they were my first experiences with true, massive disappointment.
I was in the store for my CD when Some Friendly came out. It was pretty much love at first sight. I had only heard their single (The Only One I Know) but the CD artwork and that *dead dead good* logo had me sold before I even heard the rest of the songs. They quickly became my favorite band and one of the first bands I saw in a little club. So, when the next album came out I assumed that it would be brilliant - but I found it really boring. It was my first time; I was a disappointment virgin who had been deflowered. I guess I thought that new, young bands could continue to be great forever (hey, I was a damn kid). Oh well, I needed the experience. It prepared me for the disappointment that would soon come from just about every Britpop/Shoegaze band that released albums from that point on.

Anyway, I don't mean to derail the Charlatans love. I agree they remained a good band and obviously did a much better job than say, The Stone Roses. But they just bored me to tears after I had gotten so high on Some Friendly.

Yeah the second album is definitely a grower and to me, the albums that grow on you are the best. You should check out 'Simpatico' if you are looking to be totally shocked as I was when I preordered the album back when it first came out.

Charlatans have put out some really good stuff over the years, they've always had a certain amount of cool about them. Not as keen on the latest stuff but will give this new a go..

Ive been listening quite a lot to the new 'You Cross My Path' in the two weeks Ive been away from here, and I have to say its pretty damn good all the way through. 'Oh! Vanity' is a great track. I did use to love Simpatico though.

I actually like Oh Vanity...but then again, I was always going to.
There's something about an Hammond organ.

Right Track, I had no idea you were a fan of Charlatans. What did you make of the new album as a whole. I had been put off getting it for ages as I kind of went off the whole Indie scene for a bit.
