Urban Hat€monger ? 12-28-2004 02:28 PM

I bet I get called 'opinionated' or something for this because I usually am but I can`t help think that the reason people are gushing over Smile is over what it represents rather than what it actually is.

You get called various things because you reply to threads and yet rarely answer any topics, i.e, im interested to know what your faveourite albums of 2004 are?

On your comment about Smile, I'm not so sure... I can't speak for anyone else but it doesn't represent anything to me other than happiness, and thats merely because of the music. I'm not a massive beach boys fan other than a few, including Good Vibrations, which is on Smile therefore helping to make it my faveourite album this year.

.

Well i`ll get to my list when i`ve thought it out. I don`t see whats wrong with debating a part of somebody`s list. Just having endless lists & no discussion would make it boring & i`d say pretty much all of my replies are on topic.

As for Smile , I was talking generally rather than just your opinion. I just don`t see how an album thats had 35 odd years of mythology around it can be looked at in an unbiased way whether that be good or bad.

Sweet Jane 12-29-2004 02:33 PM

One persons opinion is valid when commenting on general opinion. The general public is made up with people just like me. What makes you so sure the reviews on smile are biased? I know a lot of heavily awaited albums failed miserably, no matter how much people anticipated and wanted them to be the best albums ever made.

sleepy jack 12-29-2004 03:06 PM

Graham Coxons debut is a really cool alternative album too, has a slight blur sound to it but then he was the brains behind them for about 11 years.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-02-2005 02:46 PM

Well most of the other 4 range from being hit & miss to total crap (Crow Sit On Blood Tree being the best example of crap)
His latest one is the first one where you get the impression he`s taking it seriously.

Was that only 2004? I thought they were an older band, I only recently got into them. That shoulda been in my top 10 as well.

Slightly off-topic... they're touring now!! Woop.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-02-2005 08:37 PM

The sad thing was most of the albums I was looking forward to this year weren`t very good.

Yes I mean you Gomez , Clinic , Ed Harcourt , Beastie Boys , Charlatans , Badly Drawn Boy , Ian Brown , The Thrills , REM , Prodigy

hookers with machineguns 01-02-2005 09:32 PM

I personally liked Clinic's album, but I agree with Thrills, Gomez, and Badly Drawn Boy- disappointing.

Sweet Jane 01-02-2005 09:40 PM

Badly Drawn Boy has been disappointing since Bewilderbeast. That was the most beautifully composed album I'd heard in ages. I wasn't expecting much from the Thrills anyway, but I agree with Gomez, Ian Brown, REM, Ed, Prodigy and Charlatans. I liked Beasties and Clinic's albums though.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-02-2005 10:00 PM

The problem I had with the Clinic album was there was no progression like there was from the first 2 albums. It sounded like the same song 12 times to me.

And the Beastie Boys album wasn`t so much bad , more totally forgettable

Molasses 01-03-2005 12:14 PM

1. Black Keys - Rubber Factory
2. Sonic Youth - Nurse
3. Black Rebel Motocycle Club - Take them on on your own
4. The Vines - Winning Days
5. PJ Harvey - Uh Uh Her
6. Modest Mouse - Good news for people who love Bad news
7. Air - Walkie Talkie

Sweet Jane 01-04-2005 08:42 AM

I wasn't that impressed with PJ Harvey's newest album at all, or BRMC or the Vines.
Actually the vines was just awful.

Molasses 01-04-2005 08:48 AM

Winning days wasn't as good as Highly Evolved. But it still deserves to be in my top 10 it has it's moments, and plus it is 100 times better then any pop-punk album released this year.

hookers with machineguns 01-04-2005 10:42 AM

^^ Pj Harvey's was a re-release of Uh Huh Her, which was originally released a while ago (i dont remember when). But, it wasnt as good as Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea or To Bring You My Love.
And I agree with your comment about the Vines, although I never liked them to begin with.

Personally i think BRMC's "take them on, on your own" was the best album i heard and/or bought all year. suddenly, stop and six barrel shotgun should be alternative classics.

A lot of these lists look the same. I don't understand the fuss over some of the artists: interpol, modest mouse, franz, and the hives. These groups are probably given lots of attention for being the orgasm-of-the-year for total request junkies. do you think anyone woulda cared about modest mouse's new record if they didnt sign to a major label. after all, their older cd's were just as good if not a lot better than Good News. And, interpol's cd was overrated, not any better than Turn off the bright lights. and, franz- please. That 'take me out' song will probably be their bread and butter for the rest of their lives. And, the hives- i have no comment, because i never liked them or listen to them closely. Couple of others that werent that great were the Thrills album (just listen to it), the new Cure, and the beastie boys (highly overrated).

Wow I could have written that myself.

It`s almost like people are told what to like & whats good.

Sweet Jane 01-17-2005 01:15 PM

Hookers I was thinking the exact same thing when I looked at those lists. There were a few similar to mine, with albums I thought were good albums like Elliott Smith and Sonic Nurse, but there was one major difference. They all seemed to also feature Modest Mouse, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and occasionally The Hives and The Thrills. I didn't get it either. Sounded more like a music magazine list, but that must be what people like, otherwise these bands wouldn't be so popular.
I also had Beasties on my list I think, but it was pretty far down as it wasn't that great an album compared to previous.

people can make up their own minds about whats good- they can also decide themselves who they want to like. bands like blink 182 and GC are continuously built up in the media- yet they dont seem too popular on this website.

it may just be personal taste? a bit far fetched of course..but it could be.

jibber 01-17-2005 07:25 PM

^ what! people can like different kinds of music?! now that's just crazy talk....

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-21-2005 04:27 PM

Mind you having said that most peoples lists are the same , one thing I have noticed is nobody has said the Kings Of Leon album.Which surprises me given all the hype around it.

Mind you it`s not all that great , It might just squeeze into my top 30 if I could be bothered to make a list of 30.

i really like KOL. i dunno, their just different to everything else around at the moment. they've got the whole hillbilly sleaze rock thing going on and unlike most stupid acts around at the moment they care more about the music than what they look like.

I don't want to come off as an advocate for Urban Hatemonger here but he did list his top 100 songs in the rock forum. So while you may not know his top X albums for 2004, but you have an idea of what he's about.
