I had a friend who worshiped Nick Cave (and, more peripherally, the Bad Seeds I suppose) as an angsty teen. She had posters of him all over her room; even had something approaching a shrine for him in one corner, candles and all. I must confess that the music never really grabbed me, although I could see what the affinity towards such an "alternative" figure would consist in. "Australian Goth" would seem to be an oxymoron, but he inhabits this designation admirably, especially considering that mainstream Australian culture seems to be so monolingual/homogenous/stifling/white. (Apologies in advance to any Australians out there: I am indeed an outsider, so what do I know? Agreed, although I did qualify my statement with "seems".)
