I don't think he gets enough credit for being an amazing piano player.

Glad this thread was bumped. I've been obsessed with finding good covers for the "The Ship Song," but I always find myself coming right back to Nick's version at the end of the day. I've dabbled a good bit in most of his more well-known tracks (such as "The Weeping Song" and his "Hallelujah" cover, etc), and I've been meaning to dig a little deeper into his work, as I love his overall style.. Which album is a good starter to get me going??

Loved the opening to the opening track. That's always extremely important for me, that the album "greets" me appropriately. What ensued was pretty much what I already appreciate about Nick Cave's work: the intense music paired with the tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Solid. I'll listen again tomorrow because I lost track of time while the album played and before I knew it my YouTube had already cycled to another album of his. I like to take a new album in its entirety. I feel a bender coming on and I'm looking forward to getting to know more of his songs better.

I'm the same exact way, if the opener is nothing to write home about, it's usually always a done deal for me. I still give the record a listen, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. His last records great, Abbatoir Blues is a double record but equally fantastic. His 90's stuff is good too. I think it pales in comparison though to his post-2000's work. That's just me though.

Y?

From what I remember of what the OP said a few years after this was posted, it was in response to a bunch of **** threads about **** artists by boring posters. Or something like that.

I do message boards to read opinions and to express my own. I'm not a fan of having a "filter" and I can be kind of stream of consciousness.

Actually, what most people call spam is either (a) advertising, or (b) posting a ton of more or less content-free threads one right after the other.

It's not like I just started using the Internet yesterday and have no idea how people use the term "spam."

JGuy Grungeman 08-18-2016 03:58 PM

Nick Cave reminds me of film noir. The grim content is more used for shock value/artistic quality rather than resonance. Actually, noir with a Nick Cave spoundtrack would be cool.

He's certainly quite active composing film scores...

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis ~ Works

JGuy Grungeman 08-19-2016 10:27 PM

Did he do any noir?

Terrapin_Station 08-20-2016 09:46 AM

Speaking of all of that, and there's a Nick Cave connection here: this is better than Nick Cave, too:

Actually got to see this guy live over the summer. If you get the chance - go! He's maybe one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

Yeah I'd have to agree there. Seen him a few times, though admittedly years ago, and he never disappointed.

I'd smoke a thick cigar with Cave and talk about prostitutes all day!

He's a ****ing awesome dude

So what did you all think about Ghosteen and Carnage?

Not for me. I guess they were fine in certain settings, but they're not albums I'd throw on whenever.

Which one did you prefer?

And given your feeling on these two albums, what's your favorite Cave album?

TheBig3 08-18-2021 02:20 PM

Skeleton Key. It felt darker.

Boatman's Call which I suspect is now buttock.

SGR 08-18-2021 06:09 PM

You mean Skeleton Tree?

It's been a minute since I've listened to Boatman's Call, but I can't say I was ever enamored with that one. Too slow/subdued. Not enough variety. I think I preferred the Good Son to that album if we're talking about Cave's more laid-back/acoustic efforts.

TheBig3 08-18-2021 07:54 PM

I mean it's hard to pick an album because I like his changes. I love Tupelo, Dig Yourself (this was actually a killer album), West Country Girl, Stagger Lee

Sorry, yes, Skeleton Tree

adidasss 08-18-2021 08:40 PM

I don't think I ever listened to a full Nick Cave album. One of those guys that's very familiar and I like some of his songs, but it never interested me enough to seek out more of his music. Should put it on my to-do list.

I saw One More Time With Feeling and liked it. He's great in a cinematic setting.

To clarify, you mean Nick Cave without the Bad Seeds. Right? Just Nick Cave solo? Still not seeing how it's "Folk" but I want to take baby steps.

Rowland IS The Birthday Party

I like TBD but do they have an album comparable to From Her To Eternity?

From Her To Eternity sounds more like TBP than basically the rest of the Bad Seeds discography.

Prayers on Fire is the best Birthday Party album imo. Check it out if you haven't.
