Meh, I'm biased.
I really don't like Waits, I just can't look past those dreadful dreadful vocals. Which doesn't happen often, I also don't think his lyrics are up to much for the most part although some of his lyrics are quite good. That said, I think Cave knows how to write a great melody. His music is certainly as good as his lyrics. |

One artist I've never took to is Mr. Waits, maybe one day it'll just click but for now he's definitely not for me.

The original is the sound of throwing up into the toilet after a rough night's drinking. This sounds like something you'd see on the Andy Williams Show. |

Any non-Australians watch things like this and think "she's going to die from irikanji" or "its gunna be a damn shame when some crazy ass Aussie insect kills them both? Also, does Kylie sorta look like Vanilla to anyone else? |
I'm a Nick Cave and Tom Waits fan. I have much love for them both. That said, though, only Nick Cave is my boyfriend. Always and forever. Tom is like the crochety carnival barker/cabaret singer in my mind. And occasional balladeer. I love most of his ballads, too.
A Tom Waits story: several years ago, I was doing some internship hours at a local counseling center for my grad school program. Interning along with me was one of the younger girls in the program, a girl whose parents had paid for most of her education, her sporty red Honda, and whose taste in music included hip hop, mainstream pop, and popular '80s music (i.e., a-ha, Madonna and Wang Chung)... basically, whatever was easiest to find on the radio dial. During our internship hours, we would periodically get lunch together, usually jetting around in her little red Honda while she complained to me about her amazingly adorable ex-boyfriend who couldn't get over her and was still trying to date her, although she just wanted to be friends (oh, to suffer her problems ). ...Anyway, one afternoon, we decided to go to lunch in my car for a change, and I happened to have Tom Waits' Blood Money in my car stereo. The second the CD started playing, my classmate said to me (and I'm quoting verbatim), "Who is this guy? He sounds like he's retarded. Does he have something wrong with him?" ...Ahh, memories. Anyway, yes, Nick Cave is a god. Not so much that I think he can do no wrong (Nocturama - need I say more?). But, for the most part, I love everything he turns his hand to. Lately, I've been listening to Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus again. Overall, not one of his best collections of songs, but some really great moments on both CDs. I pulled it out to listen again after hearing "O Children" from The Lyre of Orpheus in a pivotal scene in the latest Harry Potter movie. I've never been happier to hear a Nick Cave song on a soundtrack. He will remain one of my all-time favorite artists forever. |

If Tom Waits doesn't write good lyrics then I have no ****ing clue who does. Oh, and I think Tom Waits is better than Nick Cave, not by a landslide or anything though. However, I do think Nick Cave is a much better performer. Especially here: Far better than the recorded version in my opinion. |
Far better than the recorded version in my opinion.[/QUOTE] I like the ...unwaveringness (is that a word?!) of the recorded version, I think it fits the song beautifully, but that performance was awesome as well. |
My English Teacher introduced me to Nick Cave after I told her I was getting into Tom Waits
I ABSOLUTELY fell in love with his music, <--notice the ava I've been a fan for about a month and already hes in my top artists and then I went to see the new harry potter movie and O Children was in it, which was just too perfect, I flipped out love this guy |

Here are a couple of my favorite recent Nick Cave video clips.
"There She Goes My Beautiful World," live on Jools Holland: Grinderman's latest video, "Heathen Child": |

If that makes sense? |
I love Nick Cave, but he was definitely a part of one of the most uncomfortable mix CDs I've ever received - it was all full of lovey dovey type songs, then the last track was:
SUCH a good song, but definitely changed the entire tone of the mix. :/ |
I was quite surprised that wizards and witches listen to Nick Cave. (i.e. one of Nick Cave's songs was playing on the radio in a monumental scene in the latest Harry Potter movie). I thought this was pretty cool. Considering the Harry Potter films usually only use instrumental scores.

After the millionth person told me today that I am going to love Mr. Cave I decided there was somthing to sll the reccommendations and I am now looking for a starting place. Suggestions?

I don't think he's ever made a bad record, so you could probably pick any of his albums at random... Or start at the beginning, with From Her To Eternity... |

Favorite albums after the Best Of collection include No More Shall We Part, Dig Lazarus Dig, and the 2-disc Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. Abattoir/Orpheus is more hit-or-miss, but has some great tracks on both albums. Nocturama, the album Nick released after No More Shall We Part, is kind of a stinker, imho, and generally considered to not be one of his better ones by most fans. You might also enjoy Nick's side project band, Grinderman, which just released their second album earlier this year. Here's a couple more Nick clips to give you a taste of his flavor. "In The Ghetto" "Tupelo" (one of my favorite Caves) Grinderman, "No Pussy Blues" |

"The good son" was playing in a record store; it played all the way through, then I went up and asked who it was, and promptly bought it. After that I got "Henry's dream", and these two albums made me want more, so then it was "Let love in" followed by "Murder ballads", after which "The boatman's call" was released, so I was up to date then. I grabbed "No more shall we part" when it came out, and think it's a great album, but have been less impressed with some other recent efforts, such as the double "Abbatoir blues/Lyre of Orpheus", "Nocturama" and "Dig! Lazarus! Dig!" which I really didn't like. I bought his earlier albums too, just to have them, but haven't really taken the time to get into them, if I can, though "The mercy seat" off "Tender prey" is one excellent song. |

I listen to The Birthday Party's album Junk Yard quite a while ago but I stopped at the fifth song because, frankly, I ****ing hated it.
Am I a bad person now? |

Huh, I randomly took a listen to Let Love In and Murder Ballads and now I ****ing love Nick Cvae & the Bad Seeds. I guess Junk Yard wasn't a good introduction to Nick Cave's stuff.

try Hee Haw! or Prayers on Fire

I will have to get Prayers on Fire. I have the 12" of Nick the Stripper but haven't heard the rest of the album. |

edit - Junkyard is also fine with me, BTW |
Didn't care for the second grindermen lp but really loved the first.
Enjoy each stage of nick cave a lot wow this sounds almost exactly like jesus lizard |
Wtf? Who is Nick Cave and why is his content "age restricted"!
I cant even vote because youtube wont even let me listen to the vids. |

I think my favorite Nick & the Seeds album might still be 'Let Love In'. 'Loverman' is one of all time great Nick performances.
Now that Mick Harvey has moved on and Grinderman has broken up, I wonder, will the Seeds continue? Losing Blixa was bad enough, but Harvey was pretty integral to the Seeds sound and function as a working band. It will be interesting to see how Nick chooses to continue his career. |
