For your edification Nick was influenced by the magnificent The Saints initially. He has said that himself. So much so that Ed Kuepper is now the touring guitarist with The Bad Seeds, replacing Mick Harvey. If you can find it in your part of the planet Nick wrote a book called And The Ass Saw The Angel. As goth as Caves music. You may enjoy it.

I look forward to these revues.

The book kicks so much ass
It's just so visually rich in language, it's brilliant.

^Maybe I'll check that book out sometime.

^ That there's the first truly great album Nick Cave released with the Bad Seeds in my opinion. Knockin' On Joe, Tupelo, Wanted Man, Black Crow King - so many solid songs on it.

Schizotypic 04-07-2009 02:18 PM

I just want to apologize for not meeting my deadlines, and to tell anyone who is interested that I'll be taking about a week off from reviewing any albums until next Monday, and maybe even the computer in general. School just has to be a higher priority then the computer and music (at least for a week), as addicting as it is.

I really hate not following through though, it's so against me.

I had a friend who worshiped Nick Cave (and, more peripherally, the Bad Seeds I suppose) as an angsty teen. She had posters of him all over her room; even had something approaching a shrine for him in one corner, candles and all. I must confess that the music never really grabbed me, although I could see what the affinity towards such an "alternative" figure would consist in. "Australian Goth" would seem to be an oxymoron, but he inhabits this designation admirably, especially considering that mainstream Australian culture seems to be so monolingual/homogenous/stifling/white. (Apologies in advance to any Australians out there: I am indeed an outsider, so what do I know? Agreed, although I did qualify my statement with "seems".)

Australian Goth? Hardly seems the gothic type, and isn't normally qualified as such (The Bad Seeds I am talking about of course)

Have you ever visited Australia? Just wondering, no malice...

I don't really care about the image... And I am guessing most fans don't. It's about the music, the image just lends itself to that.

Nick cave is excellent, my personal favourite would have to be Henry's Dream although Murder Ballads is also very good. I have a lot of his albums solo, with The Bad Seeds, and also The Birthday Party.
You should check out The Birthday Party they were his first group from around the post-punk era. They are very weird though and dark as **** (but hey its Nick Cave we're talking about here)

Zarko 04-14-2009 10:02 AM

The Bad Seeds>Grinderman>>>Birthday Party...

Grinderman are phenomenal for the one album they've release :p:

Top Cave albums are
Let Love In
Tender Prey
The Boatman's Call
Henry's Dream

Though I fucking loathe the fact that this thread is in this section of the forum....

annapurna 04-14-2009 10:31 AM

I fell in love with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds while I was watching one of my favorite films, Wings of Desire. They performed From Her To Eternity in the movie and it was just aces in my book.

I hear that the remasters for From Her To Eternity and Your Funeral...My Trial will be released next month. I don't know what happened to those albums after I moved, so I can't wait to buy them again next month.

Australian gothic, I meant. "Goth" is something entirely different, clearly. I would consider aspects of Tom Waits' oeuvre to be American GothIC, for example. Perhaps I am wrong in this assumption, too? Oh well, can't get it right every time.

No, I have visited Australia. I am sure it is filled with "good" and "bad" people, just as is any place. And mainstream media output is not a representative reflection of a nation: if this were so, America, for example, would solely be associated with Friday night football, Saturday night baseball, the hotdog and hamburger, Oprah, Tyra American Idol, The E! Channel, Rihanna, Beyonce, etc.,etc (!!!) Point taken.

Unrelated: didn't Cave perform a duet with Kylie Minogue at one point, before her "comeback"? What is the consensus on this song, "Where The Wild Roses Grow"?

Zarko 04-14-2009 09:10 PM

Concerning the gothic thing, I just normally don't associate them with the idea... Of course I could be off the ball as well.

Awesome song, despite Minogue being present :D :p:

Scienquist 12-08-2009 05:54 PM

You are totally right man! You can't stop the Cave he's a musical genius! He's got the best stage presence I've ever seen. Plus he's also a painter, author and an actor. What a hero!

My favorite Nick Cave album by a country mile, and I'm a huge fan of the man. There is something about this album... Maybe it's the way he looks on the cover.

Don't forget the epic "The Six Strings that Drew Blood"

Second Grinderman album completed, ready to be rleeased early 2010.

Another great little number that. As I say, it's definitely my favourite pre-Tender Prey album at least.

I've got pretty high hopes for that, and the so-so Nocturama aside, the guy's yet to disappoint me with his output.

Why was this thread merged with the Dig Lazarus Dig ratings thread?

Bulldog 12-20-2009 12:05 PM

Seems it was merged with Schizotypic's discography thread too. A bit strange really.

Not quite as strange as people calling DLD average though.

Birthday Party guitarist, Nick Cave collaborator, dies

Australian rock musician Rowland S Howard has died.

The former Birthday Party guitarist is believed to have been battling liver cancer and was awaiting a transplant.

Howard's career spanned three decades, in which he released a number of solo albums and had a number of collaborations with acclaimed Australian musician Nick Cave.

This is such a shame. Some of the Birthday Party's guitar work is just incredible, one of my very favourite guitarists. His solo stuff is pretty rad too ... RIP :(

Good seeing Tupelo up there.

This.

I'm also deeply offended by the lack of Darker With the Day on that list too - not only my favourite Cave song but also one of my 10 favourite songs ever.

On another note, the new Grinderman tune sounds fucking great. Can't wait for the new album.

Seltzer 08-06-2010 10:42 PM

It's not a bad list really and it's good that it pays attention to his whole discography. And I'm glad that Release the Bats was the highest ranked BP track.

For me, the glaring omission is Loom of the Land which is my fav Cave track. I think the best track on Dig Lazarus Dig is Today's Lesson rather than the other two that were up there. I'm biased towards Tender Prey so I'd have Watching Alice up there too. City of Refuge is great but I'd possibly swap it for Slowly Goes the Night. And I'd probably swap Love Letter for I Let Love In.

Bulldog 08-07-2010 05:04 AM

I think it's also a bit lame how Heathen Child's on that list, despite the album not being out yet. True, it's an excellent song, but surely it's a bit soon?

I'm gonna attempt my own list and try and put it in order too, maybe post it here tomorrow or something...

The man himself asked for it to be on there, he also peronally wanted The Mercy Seat as #1.

loveissucide 08-07-2010 07:13 AM

No "Are You The One I've Been Waiting For" OR "Mercy"?

loveissucide 08-07-2010 07:14 AM

And Hang On To Yourself was the best track on Dig Lazarus Dig, not either of the two selected.

Perfect From Now On 08-09-2010 06:18 PM

just listened to a few songs by nick cave and the bad seeds on their myspace. I definitely think their music was a big influence on ryan gosling's dead man's bones

Nah. Good tuneage there, but it's definitely More News From Nowhere that takes it for me. In fact, I might just get it on in a minute - it's been a while.

i'd never heard nick cave until i read the abhorrent title of this thread. and i generally don't go out of my way to dis an artist, but i find nick cave repulsive...

and he's got NOTHING on Cohen!

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-13-2010 07:04 PM

Nick Cave is like Leonard Cohen but without all the really dull records.

TheCunningStunt 08-13-2010 07:10 PM

What album is generally considered Cave's masterpiece?

Let Love In/The Boatman's Call?

I think Murder Ballads is by far his best. I adore that album.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-13-2010 07:13 PM

I don't think he has a best album

All his run of albums from Tender Prey to The Boatman's Call are really solid.

TheCunningStunt 08-13-2010 07:19 PM

Yeah, he's consistently good. I never hear people really giving Murder Ballads much credit, I've never heard anyone cite it as his best album which is strange to me. Lyrically I think he was at his best with Murder Ballads. Maybe it's because there's so many great albums to choose from, that's why people don't hold it at the top.

And oi! Leave Cohen alone.

Really? I think Murder Ballads is his most consistently lauded album.

Yep, I hear praise for Let Love In/The Boatman's Call/Tender Pray but never Murder Ballads.
