Depends on the style you're looking for. Lyrically Murder Ballads and The Boatman's Call are the best of the Bad Seeds albums (that's not to say that the other albums don't have brilliant lyrics, just that those two are more brilliant), if you want the pure Bad Seeds experience go for Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus (they're different sides to the one album) and if you want his more modern rough sound then go for Dig, Lazarus, Dig! oreither of Grinderman's albums. I can't actually comment on any Bad Seeds records pre-90s or The Birthday Party, so someone else might be able to suggest some of that stuff.

The only ones I would hesitate to recommend are the first two - they're pretty raw and and scary and probably for Birthday Party fans only. They're mighty good though.
Your Funeral My Trial and Tender Prey are more Southern Gothic. Is Nick lamenting his woman because she left him or because he killed her and buried her in the back yard? You're never quite sure. Brilliant stuff. The Good Son is probably unlike any other album in the Seed's catalog. You could call it the first Ballad album, but it's a lot darker and weirder than later stuff like Boatman's. Many think it's among their very best work, and I tend to agree. Henry's Dream and Let Love In are, I think, the albums where the modern version of the Seeds really came into their own. Still very gothic and dark but much more polished and assured musically. 'Let Love In' is one of my all time favorite records. All highly recommended!!! |

I love Nick Cave. I have always loved everything about Nick Cave. But just the title of your post makes me want to hate Nick Cave, so if you really love Nick Cave... stop!

I have never heard of Nick Cave, what album should I get first?
Edit - Never mind, read upwards and saw recommendations already. That said, I doubt I will be convinced of this threads claim, but I hope it is true, discovering something that great would be awesome. Ill soon offer feedback |
