Meh, I'm biased.
I really don't like Waits, I just can't look past those dreadful dreadful vocals.
Which doesn't happen often, I also don't think his lyrics are up to much for the most part although some of his lyrics are quite good.
That said, I think Cave knows how to write a great melody. His music is certainly as good as his lyrics.

I love Tom Waits' voice. And his lyrics.

One artist I've never took to is Mr. Waits, maybe one day it'll just click but for now he's definitely not for me.

His vocals suit the music and songs perfectly, as proved by many a disastrous cover.

I'm a Nick Cave and Tom Waits fan. I have much love for them both. That said, though, only Nick Cave is my boyfriend. Always and forever. Tom is like the crochety carnival barker/cabaret singer in my mind. And occasional balladeer. I love most of his ballads, too.

A Tom Waits story: several years ago, I was doing some internship hours at a local counseling center for my grad school program. Interning along with me was one of the younger girls in the program, a girl whose parents had paid for most of her education, her sporty red Honda, and whose taste in music included hip hop, mainstream pop, and popular '80s music (i.e., a-ha, Madonna and Wang Chung)... basically, whatever was easiest to find on the radio dial. During our internship hours, we would periodically get lunch together, usually jetting around in her little red Honda while she complained to me about her amazingly adorable ex-boyfriend who couldn't get over her and was still trying to date her, although she just wanted to be friends (oh, to suffer her problems :rolleyes:). ...Anyway, one afternoon, we decided to go to lunch in my car for a change, and I happened to have Tom Waits' Blood Money in my car stereo. The second the CD started playing, my classmate said to me (and I'm quoting verbatim), "Who is this guy? He sounds like he's retarded. Does he have something wrong with him?"

...Ahh, memories.

Anyway, yes, Nick Cave is a god. Not so much that I think he can do no wrong (Nocturama - need I say more?). But, for the most part, I love everything he turns his hand to. Lately, I've been listening to Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus again. Overall, not one of his best collections of songs, but some really great moments on both CDs. I pulled it out to listen again after hearing "O Children" from The Lyre of Orpheus in a pivotal scene in the latest Harry Potter movie. I've never been happier to hear a Nick Cave song on a soundtrack. He will remain one of my all-time favorite artists forever.

Whoa, O Children is in the latest HP movie?!? You have no idea how happy this makes me... dammit I really need to see it.
