can anyone tell me how this song's biblical references relate to the rest of the song? is this the basis for the whole song? to me it sounds like it is essentially about some sort of religious troubles.

it's about having to work for a living not about religion.

It's all about Billy Corgan's attempt at writing the worst lyrics in the history of rock.

Yeah, this song really has nothing to do with religion at all. To me it was always about conforming to reality, despite not wanting to at all hence the phrase "despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage." It pretty much is just an ode to how parasitic and draining society is.


I don't really know why I even bothered responding in thought to this, because I doubt you are ever going to post again, I guess I have always had a soft spot for this song, even though last time I listened to it I got bored half way through and switched to a different song.

i actually had to dig out the song again to find the religious reference (it's in the 2nd chorus)

it's basically about coming to grips with the christ complex so many western children grow up with (their egos desire for external validation and attention). to overcome the idea that we're really that special and unique and that if we believe in something hard enough we can really transform into some kind of magical rainbow pissing unicorn (or in this songs case a bullet with butterfly wings).

basically you're not christ, neither is corgan. you're only as special as the next person and you're going to have to work at a job to survive no matter how much you rebel or try to rage against the machine.

I've thought it of it in that light myself, that makes perfect sense... I always took the Jesus reference as meaning, "well we all get kinda screwed over by society in the end" kind of notion...

hehehehe, I'm thinking Billy had to get off the couch one morning and really didn't want to, so the whole notion of the song entered his head... :-)

that or he had people bugging him for 'another' single. apparently he can still fake it for one more show, although from the last live SP footage i've seen the faking is becoming a lot more apparent.
