R. Stevie Moore
I am loathe to submit musical prodigy and son of esteemed Elvis Presley bandman Bob Moore into the f*cking indie thread but it's more fitting, despite the man's pop aspirations. "Recorded in Nashville between 1972 and 1976 on a pair of four-tracks with one cheap microphone, then self-released in an initial edition of 100 copies, PHONOGRAPHY is the birth of the Lo-Fi DIY aesthetic. Artists from Guided by Voices and Pavement to the Apples in Stereo and Cornelius owe a tremendous debt to R. Stevie Moore, the first to make a viable career completely outside the musical mainstream. Containing inspired pop songs, Syd Barrett-meets-Brian Wilson ballads, Zappaesque experiments, spoken word pieces, whimsical oddities and one song ("Moons") that predated Stereolab's sound by 15 years, PHONOGRAPHY is an inspired grab bag and the first solid evidence that R. Stevie Moore was a refreshingly different musical personality.'' I love R. Stevie Moore. He obviously just got youtube because he's uploaded literally hundreds of these in the last couple of years. Get hip to Stevie kids! AND: YouTube - R. Stevie Moore - Sort of Way (1987) YouTube - R. Stevie Moore - Play Myself Some Music (1986) Oh, and he's still going Last edited by Molecules; 10-12-2009 at 05:23 PM. |

super bumparoo
here's a free-to-download compilation, there have been loads over the years (he has over 400 records done and counting), and this one is really good. Check out if you like Daniel Johnston, innovation and invention that is not corporate-sponsored, progressive/professional pop, video cassettes, introversion, if you think it's important to tell your scene friends what obscure indie music you discovered.... Although he basically does mash-ups of any genre you care to name Download link is in the top right Comfort Stand Recordings — R. Stevie Moore - Tra La La La Phooey! Bump. Here's the album you want to get started with, home recording 101. Oh and if you need that sort of justification, Phonography was listed among 'the fifty most significant indie records' in Rolling Stone’s Alt-Rock-A-Rama.
edit for fans ov: Swell Maps, Guided By Voices, not being an idiot, the Monochrome Set, pop music, Daniel Johnston, the Feelies, This Heat, Tall Dwarfs and various lo-fi obscuria Here's Mr. Moore answering a question from this interview. A creative being tailor-made for Molecules idol worship. DS: What kind of music do you listen to these days? RSM: There's that question again. As has been the case for my entire life, it's everything all the time. Back to back. Freeform radio in my head. I thought most intelligent beings' tastes were also like this, but I guess I'm wrong. I've never locked into any set band or format or genre. Every day is different. Heck, every quarter-day. I have thousands of LPs and 45s, so that tells you something right there. A to Z. All eras, all extremes, in small doses. It's really no big deal. Lately? Mahler. Of Montreal. Bowie's Berlin trilogy. Speedeath metal. Tea for the Tillerman. Bethlehem & Contemporary labels '50s west coast jazz. 1/2 japanese. James Brown ad infinitum. Sing along w/Mitch Miller. Crispy Ambulance and all things Factory/Hannett. Hookfoot. Jack Nitzsche's St. Giles Cripplegate. Porter Wagoner. Shins. Lord Buckley. Moody Blues. The Fall. Piaf. Beatlegs. Tom & Jerry kiddie records. PiL. Ventures vs Shadows. Sparks and Roxy. Flatt 'n Scruggs. How can any serious music lover not aim for variety like this??? That's why this entire last decade has reeked of el stinko to me, pure tunnel-vision mindset mindlessness, anything but genuine embrace for the history of authentic real music; target marketing for the mindless youth again... Destiny's Child? Who? Justin? Lil Bow Wow? Fall Out Boy??? Ha! Man, I don't even wanna know about these modern "acts" anymore. Such disposable ice cream flavors of the week. Who's buying it? I'm also embarrassed by my inner turmoil about all of this. I really need to get over it and remove all concern about mainstream pop. Last edited by Molecules; 03-06-2009 at 03:22 PM. |

Here is a proper write-up I did for a music blog called A Future In Noise, with a greatly expanded couple of introductory compilations incorporating material from '75-'07 Classic bilge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rB3S9B8vW8 Punk parody, made in '77! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKPGfFmW18o |
