Most Influential and Best Manchester Band

I will say in order (and I include Salford!)

Smiths
Oasis
Roses
Joy Division
Mondays
Buzz****s

But I am open to debate.
I will say that it is based on :
How many other bands they influenced.
Impact on UK and world music scene.
Creativity like skills, originality, charisma etc
What they did after demise or in other outfits.
Pure brilliance of stardom.
Critical aclaim.
I think my top 3 will stand the test of anyones arguement but lets try shall we.

ADELE 09-05-2008 05:45 PM

Buzz****s. I saw them in Luton in this small hall and my brother tried to get there but couldn't make it and I sang ever fallen in love with the band. That was so brilliant.
I love harmony in my head, esp is brilliant too.
Punk is so positive when you think about it.
Like never mind the bollox.
It is like get up and do things positive.
I loved esp and ever fallen in love by the buzz****s.

jackhammer 09-05-2008 05:48 PM

Although similar themed arguments exist, this one can stay open for a while. Here we go. Flaming time. Stone Roses are so ridiculously over rated it defies belief. :D

ADELE 09-05-2008 05:54 PM

but enough about me!
tell me this aint a bloody classic?

jackhammer 09-05-2008 05:58 PM

No amount of vids will make me change my mind. Everyone hates the second album but I like a good few tracks off it and tracks such as 'I Wanna Be Adored' and 'Fools Gold' are great but the notion that the debut was a stonewall classic goes straight over my head. A Byrds rip off maybe.

wilson said that they got some money like the mondays and working class lads don't know what to do with sudden money and go off their trolleys whereas middle class boys know how to plan a career!
So the Roses folded over cocaine and weed.
But a good band should do all their stuff then fold or just tour the old stuff.
Otherwise they are career bands and not singing from the heart at the time and I love the roses.
I love waterfall so much.
It is like the opening of a life.
They imploded like all the best bands!

jackhammer 09-05-2008 06:08 PM

I can honestly say that 'Waterfall' is in my top ten of most hated tracks.

spark10036 09-05-2008 06:11 PM

both most influential and best: The Smiths

ADELE 09-05-2008 06:12 PM

top ten of all time you say?
so you prefer stock aiken and waterman and pop idol songs?
You prefer girls aloud and spice girls?
Only kidding.
Maybe metal heads don't like acid dance music.
Maybe you are been ironic?
do you mean tracks of the roses?

Mr Sensitive 09-05-2008 06:14 PM

The Smiths all the way.

jackhammer 09-05-2008 06:15 PM

Barclay James Harvest and John Mayalls Bluesbreakers were important artists too.

You have me down to a tee. I can now go to my grave happy.

ADELE 09-05-2008 06:18 PM

you crack me up man.
encyclopedia of bands.
do you reckon Oasis will get more critical aclaim later on?
Stop me by the Smiths is my favourite along with just haven't earned it yet and my all time fav although morrisey is every day is like sunday.
makes me think of seaside towns!!!!

jackhammer 09-05-2008 06:28 PM

Your deflection of subject conversation is legendary. BJH are hardly a cult band and John Mayalls Bluesbreakers are probably THE quintessential British Blues Rock band. Both originally hail from Manchester.

To answer your original post: Joy Division serve up a grey depressed demeanour coupled with an intelligence and resilience that best describes my view of Manchester. I see a lot of similarities with B'ham.

ADELE 09-05-2008 06:34 PM

I can't be too critical or you will ban me.
But lets say that while your bands are good they deserve a mention but they are off shoots and they didn't really speak to kids new coming through but rather to already done kids who had grown and evolved with steady eddy laid back musak.
Do you see?
It is like if Noel goes now and does some work on other groups and sings about divorce and life as a middle aged man.
My bands were starting something for the next lot new and fresh.
I don't like Joy division much but I put them in because I appreciate others love them, you see?
And they were influential whereas your two bands or artists while good probbaly didn't do much for kids looking for something as they peak and flourish.

jackhammer 09-05-2008 06:40 PM

You have never heard BJH so stop talking balls . I get what you mean with John Mayall though. John Mayall knew feck all about music and made a few dusty blues influenced records that don't really matter now..

ADELE 09-05-2008 06:49 PM

I have not heard of him or them.
But offshoots are good as we age.
Like I said I like Oasis for tracks like stop crying your heart out and let there be love and sunday morning call because sunday morning call came out at an apt time for me around 2000 working in the city and I could relate to it and it's words where I was at at the time and I still love that song as noone knew where I was at. That is how bands like Claptons and dylans get to relate to their growing audience as we all get older and produce real deep stuff.
But I know that it is usually a bands initial impact that matters the most to a young generation.
And impact is alot to do with it.

Yeah , And let's just ignore all those hard rock/metal bands in the 70s / early 80s he influenced too shall we.

Oasis above all those bands? Sheesh. That's a lot of regard for a band that was neither innovative nor brilliant.

Mine:

The Fall
The Stone Roses
The Buzz****s
Joy Division/New Order
The Smiths
Happy Mondays

sweet_nothing 09-05-2008 09:04 PM

Agreed Oasis shouldn't be on that list they haven't done anything really new.

Joy Division
Smiths
Fall
Happy Mondays
Stone Roses

Yeh this thread isnt going to last long seeing as everyone is naming the same bands.

But it all boils down to Joy Division

I introduced a new band! Where's my medal?

the_dp 09-05-2008 09:19 PM

I still consider the Stone Roses first album to be one of the greatest works every recorded. People can say what they want about the other bands but that album was the only album that mattered when it came out and is still as listenable now as it was then. While that album is one of the best five albums to EVER be recorded, the others were in the tops 200 of the past fifty years at best. While that is still an accomplishment, nothing else on this list holds a candle to The Stone Roses first album. Not even close.

FireInCairo 09-06-2008 03:15 AM

for me its a toss up between joy division and the smiths
while the stone roses first album is genius....they havent really done anything else of any worth...

the smiths have an incontestable body of work
the queen is dead and meat is murder are near faultless for me
and morrissey and marr have gone on to do awesome things

while joy division are one of the most enigmatic and brilliant bands i have ever heard with two fantastic albums
no one can possibly sound like joy division
and the band went on to form new order
who also kick ass...

i cant decide

WaspStar 09-06-2008 06:04 AM

I think the best band are the Roses.

But Buzzcococks were the most influential and, for me, Spiral Scratch is the ultimate punk document. Four tracks, ten minutes, and pure perfection.

And are we counting New Order? You could argue their aesthetic qualities, but I think they were pretty influential on the dance scene.

GravitySlips 09-06-2008 07:47 AM

i like almost all the bands mentioned in the thread, but The Fall are my favourites of all time so I'd say they're my "best". As for influential, not sure at all about that.

15Steps 09-06-2008 12:04 PM

oasis? lol.

ADELE 09-06-2008 01:58 PM

I like them a lot, but it's hard to argue for influence with them. They're an example of the Rose's influence, IMO.

ADELE 09-06-2008 02:30 PM

I guess the two words simply and red mean nothing to you philistines then.
And heres me thinking you had musical knowledge and a sprinkling of taste.

Sorry to disappoint you!

You put Oasis ahead of Stone Roses, Joy Division, Buzz****s, Happy Mondays and the Charlatans. And didn't even mention The Fall.

If that's "taste," I don't want any, thanks. ;)

Piss Me Off 09-06-2008 03:08 PM

I've never got the big deal over The Charlatans, no appeal to me whatsoever.

I was joking about rehead man.
I do put Oasis ahead of roses but I didn't put those in any order just put them in.
You see, I hoped someone in the know would mention the bee gees influencing disco movement which was huge worldwide but I guess noone thought of that except me hey?
Hey hey hey?
I tested you and you failed me people.
I should moderate this forum from now on.

Hey hey hey?

To answer your question about The Bee Gees.
Apart from one of them being born in Manchester (which is debatable) and leaving while still a child, what have they got to do with Manchester!

That should have bought you enough time to google.
Now what do you think of the Space Monkeys?

jackhammer 09-06-2008 04:35 PM

Go:

Space Monkeys

right-track 09-06-2008 04:42 PM

Give him time...he'll be checking up on the Bee Gees too.

And you failed for not putting The Fall on this.

ADELE 09-06-2008 04:48 PM

insulting but not very funny like my witty comments.
To have wit you have to both mock, take the mock, yet be informative.
I don't go in for insults.
I don't care much for insults.
Because you see insults are so easy to do but wit like mine takes skill, build up and a lack of autistic seriousness about my own sense of been right on every issue.
I also like the way all the mods come in 3 one after the other.
I have your jobs very soon my foes.
oh yeah the bee gees were in mancland ten-15 years before disco.
