this dude i went to school with was huge into these guys. i heard a bunch through him but the only song i remember by name is 'super bon bon'

the_dp 06-15-2008 09:50 AM

i have to say, that was pretty awful . . . all of it.

I am completely into this band (*coughsignaturecough*).

AND HERE'S A RANDOM STORY

Back when I was like 4 or 5, I first heard one of their songs on Cartoon Network. I have liked them ever since.

I like "true dreams of wichita"
but that's about it, yet.
maybe I just need some more weeks or months relistening to some of their stuff

Did they have a song on the X-Files: Songs in the Key of X album?

I know the name but cannot recall a track.

"Unmarked Helicopters". It was also released on their "The Best of Soul Coughing" compilation album. Good song, really.

I really dug soul Coughing when they first came out. Ruby Vroom is defiantly still one of the classic alternative releases of the 90's. After that though....not so much.

All three of their releases were great. They're one of the few bands where I think everything they put out was of exactly equal quality. That said, "Screenwriter's Blues" and "Bus to Beelzebub", both of which are from the first album, are easily my two favorite songs by them.

On a side note, I was lucky enough to see them live while they were still around and they put on a hell of a show.

William_the_Bloody 06-17-2013 11:03 PM

That is one band I missed live that I would have wished to seen back in the day. Hopefully they reunite at some point.

I remember one of their follow up releases to be rather disapointing, but opinion changes with age, so I'll recheck their material.

Screenwriters Blues & Is Chicago not Chicago remain my personal favourite songs. "A man flies a plane into the Chysler building" Kind of eerie lyrics when you think of what happened 8 years down the road.

If nothing else, check out the songs "Fully Retractable", "St. Louise is Listening", "So Far I Have Not Found the Science" and "Monster Man" off of El Oso. I love the hell out of those songs.

Soft Serve is on a mixtape from an old guyfriend I recently rediscovered. I like the track a lot and I intend to acquire an album. Funny coincidence that this thread be bumped today.

Thanks good tunes, ecspecially "St. Louise is listening."

Unfortuantly it looks like I will never see a Soul Coughing reunion. Apparently Mike Doughty doesn't just dislike his former bandmates...he actually hates the music they made?!? Too bad.

Heh. He's just upset that he makes such boring music without those guys. Honestly, in many ways I think he was the least important component to their sound.

Holy hell, I forgot these dudes existed. Not that this pertains or furthers the conversation going on here, but I'm currently playing "Super Bon Bon" and "Soft Serve" and reminiscing about all that teen angst. Thanks for this.
