Swirlies
I have been downloading their discog (officially) and have been very impressed with them after they were recommended to me by a couple of members. They are a shoegaze band that are relatively melodious but on odd tracks they seemed to disappear into strange electronic tinged interludes and still come up smelling off roses. With dual Female and Male vocals they could be classed as a poor mans MBV but they do have their own sound.
Here is most of their back catalogue for download from their own site: Swirlies and Yes Girls Discography & MP3s | Sneaky Flute Empire Recommended album: They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons |
thanks for that, i love blonder tongue audio baton. their blend of lo-fi and shoegaze is intoxicating. i'll have to check out glittering world of the salons next
|
brilliant stuff, thanks v. much. swirlies are awsome.

Yes! It took me a while to get into their music, but when it clicked, I was so grateful their older material was 'officially' available to dl.
|
Look at all of the free music
|
I am going to listen to that album u recommended, Jackhammer...tomorrow.
Opinions shall be duly posted! |
I downloaded one of their albums and I have to label all of the f'ing songs cause itunes is gay

I'm surprised these guys don't get more attention. "They Spent Their Days..." is a goldmine of warbly indie goodness that has more memorable tunes than any best of, ever. "Blonder Tongue Audio Baton" has some awesome moments as well, but it completely pales in comparison to the former (which came after). It was apparently 2 years in the making, but I'm not surprised all that much because it feels like a well honed venture into sound. |
Swirlies rock. They definitely had their own sound, but I can see how they would be compared to My Bloody Valentine. (In my opinion they aren't as good but I still like them). I'd recommend their '93 album, but you guys seem to like the '96 one alot. The above song is my favorite from that album.
All great stuff though (: |
They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons is my favourite album of theirs. It's just that little more memorable than Blonder Tongue Audio Baton and 'Sunn' is just mmmmmmm.
Yeah they only sound slightly like MBV, I hear more of a Sonic Youth influence in their sound than an MBV influence. But for the most part they were an amazingly original band. The field recordings and humorous dialogue snippets really add to their albums as well, especially 'Untitled' on They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days... |
Their debut mini album also has a bit of hardcore like screams in some parts. They started out among the hardcore scene with a shoegaze/sonic youth sound that became more pronounced over time. Also, what is it with Damon and ostriches?

I lean toward that album, but I also really like Blonder Tongue Audio Baton. |
As good as the music on the album is I always look forward to the French guy talking about his cat at the end. Completely off the wall and random :D
Their debut mini-album (or is it a compilation?) is pretty good as well. Not as focused as their first two proper albums but still enjoyable. I still haven't ventured past They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days as I've read a lot of negative stuff about their later releases. |
Likewise...I've only heard the first two albums and the preceding comp, What to Do About Them.
|
I think they sounded a lot more like MBV than Sonic Youth. Lots of slow tremelo effected riffs, steady beats, and melodic vocals often mixed low. Generally less abrasive and/or off-kilter than even the smoothest Sonic Youth songs. Of course, I didn't think about these distinctions in the early 90s.
Their Brokedick Car EP is my favorite of their work. |
I guess the reason I consider them closer to SY is because they're more melodic. I Think SY has more melodic songs than MBV.
|
Nah, look at the tunings Damon uses, very much like sonic youth. Not a single standard tuning in the Swirlies catalog.
