Swirlies

I have been downloading their discog (officially) and have been very impressed with them after they were recommended to me by a couple of members. They are a shoegaze band that are relatively melodious but on odd tracks they seemed to disappear into strange electronic tinged interludes and still come up smelling off roses. With dual Female and Male vocals they could be classed as a poor mans MBV but they do have their own sound.

Here is most of their back catalogue for download from their own site:

Yes! It took me a while to get into their music, but when it clicked, I was so grateful their older material was 'officially' available to dl.

I'm surprised these guys don't get more attention. "They Spent Their Days..." is a goldmine of warbly indie goodness that has more memorable tunes than any best of, ever. "Blonder Tongue Audio Baton" has some awesome moments as well, but it completely pales in comparison to the former (which came after). It was apparently 2 years in the making, but I'm not surprised all that much because it feels like a well honed venture into sound.

Swirlies rock. They definitely had their own sound, but I can see how they would be compared to My Bloody Valentine. (In my opinion they aren't as good but I still like them). I'd recommend their '93 album, but you guys seem to like the '96 one alot. The above song is my favorite from that album.

All great stuff though (:

They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons is my favourite album of theirs. It's just that little more memorable than Blonder Tongue Audio Baton and 'Sunn' is just mmmmmmm.

Yeah they only sound slightly like MBV, I hear more of a Sonic Youth influence in their sound than an MBV influence. But for the most part they were an amazingly original band. The field recordings and humorous dialogue snippets really add to their albums as well, especially 'Untitled' on They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days...
