Their debut mini album also has a bit of hardcore like screams in some parts. They started out among the hardcore scene with a shoegaze/sonic youth sound that became more pronounced over time. Also, what is it with Damon and ostriches?

Yes I totally agree, I hear more Sonic Youth than MBV but there's a little of both. And yes I love the humorous dialog at the end. :thumb:

I lean toward that album, but I also really like Blonder Tongue Audio Baton.

As good as the music on the album is I always look forward to the French guy talking about his cat at the end. Completely off the wall and random :D

Their debut mini-album (or is it a compilation?) is pretty good as well. Not as focused as their first two proper albums but still enjoyable. I still haven't ventured past They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days as I've read a lot of negative stuff about their later releases.

Likewise...I've only heard the first two albums and the preceding comp, What to Do About Them.

I think they sounded a lot more like MBV than Sonic Youth. Lots of slow tremelo effected riffs, steady beats, and melodic vocals often mixed low. Generally less abrasive and/or off-kilter than even the smoothest Sonic Youth songs. Of course, I didn't think about these distinctions in the early 90s.

Their Brokedick Car EP is my favorite of their work.

I guess the reason I consider them closer to SY is because they're more melodic. I Think SY has more melodic songs than MBV.

Nah, look at the tunings Damon uses, very much like sonic youth. Not a single standard tuning in the Swirlies catalog.
