Best Flaming Lips record? Please no one say "At War with the Mystics!"

just wondering what everyones opinion on the matter is. so what do u think is the best flaming lips records. i am going through their discogrpahy for the first time (have only heard telepathic surgery, soft bulletin, yoshimi and at war with the mystics) so i am wondering which ones i should be sure to hear!! let me know.

teshadoh 01-31-2008 09:58 AM

At war with the mystics.

achoo 01-31-2008 10:06 AM

hahah should have expected that.

right-track 01-31-2008 10:38 AM

The Soft Bulletin edges out, At War with the Mystics.

I really should get round to listening to some of the earlier stuff, but I doubt it'll be as good as The Soft Bulletin.
Unless you know better...

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-31-2008 10:44 AM

Transmissions From The Satellite Heart was their breakthrough album which you don't seem to have heard.

My favourite Flaming Lips album has always been In A Priest Driven Ambulance.

You're right...I haven't.
How does it compare?

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-31-2008 10:53 AM

It's a lot less laid back than their current stuff.

It;s kinda like their earlier noisy albums but more commercial and with better songwriting.

Ok, maybe not - but I'm evenly split between it & Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, & Hit to Death in the Future Head.

yeah i am having trouble finding in a priest driven ambulance. i've heard a sh*t load about that album. so i want to find it badly.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-31-2008 11:20 AM

It was re-released as The Day We Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg.

Same album , but with a load of extras. Try looking for that instead.

jackhammer 01-31-2008 12:23 PM

I have only heard YOSHIMI, where should I go next? Not neccessarily the best. I can build up to that. I adore YOSHIMI though.

achoo 01-31-2008 12:38 PM

urban hatemonger, this is off topic but,

i'm donwloading some orange juice right now? what should i expect?

if u like that one try out soft bulletin, wdiely regarded as their best. some really pretty and at times heart-wrenching tunes on it!! also, just listneed to telepathic surgery today and loved it!! especially "hell's angel's cracker factory" !

but soft bulletin is just a gorgeous album. very pretty!

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-31-2008 12:44 PM

Expect early 80s jangly pop records. Some of the earlier stuff is a bit more punk influenced.

I don't think they really get the credit they deserve. They were doing the same sort of thing the Smiths did, only 4 years earlier.

achoo 01-31-2008 12:52 PM

yeah. cool. sh*t dennis bovell produced their last album according to allmusic.com. same dude that did one of the pop groups albums! not too shabby. i'm liking the album "you can't hide your love forever" so far!

thanks.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-31-2008 12:54 PM

You can't hide your love forever is their best album by a mile.

You should check out The Glasgow School too , It's a collection of all their early stuff.

achoo 01-31-2008 12:56 PM

will do. thanks.

Rainard Jalen 01-31-2008 01:44 PM

The Soft Bulletin is the best record of theirs that I've heard. I haven't heard all their albums, though. I'd be surprised if they were able to really top it.

It depends how you define 'top it'

The Soft Bulletin was a huge change of direction , there's nothing really in the albums they did before that you could compare it to.

To be fair the Smiths did it better. I like the Soft Bulletin best.

Vulture_Helsing 01-31-2008 05:47 PM

Transmissions... very, very easily.

GravitySlips 01-31-2008 06:10 PM

In a Priest Driven Ambulance

duck 01-31-2008 08:46 PM

the live one is hella good
but yoshimi is evenly good

that one dude 02-01-2008 11:17 AM

hmm, it's between Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi for me. I cant decide, both albums have some of my favorites.

Molecules 02-02-2008 04:47 AM

Hit to Death In the Future Head!!!
I love the early, psychedelic, shoegazy stuff....

pheurton 02-03-2008 03:58 AM

Possibly the flight test EP
Their version of can't get you out of my head is the ****.

But in reality I guess transmissions or at war with the mystics.

achoo 02-04-2008 08:22 AM

really eh? maybe i should re-listen to at war with the mystics cos when i heard it i thought it was boring and for some reason really annoying.

Zombeels 03-13-2008 12:03 PM

Soft Bulletin is their best. This is not an opinion but fact. I have classified documents to prove it.

Molecules 03-13-2008 12:54 PM

the Lips turned into church music, they lost the edge... all saccharine and fluffy like their live show.

monellia 03-13-2008 12:58 PM

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots probs has the best ratio of accessibility to quality so I'd say start with that

I like all of their albums but Transmissions and Yoshimi are their best imo

bridget_says 03-17-2008 10:30 PM

soft bulletin mos def. the gash gives me chills.

postalblue 03-18-2008 01:13 PM

I like Transmissions best. At War... was a major letdown for me. Soft Bulletin was pretty good too, but not their best, IMO.

Dr_Rez 03-18-2008 02:28 PM

I think Yoshimis every bit as good or better than Soft Bulliten and Transmissions.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-18-2008 02:34 PM

I really miss the days when they made records like this

Spidersaretoads 03-19-2008 09:56 PM

Soft Bulletin with Yoshmi a Close second

chartsengrafs 03-23-2008 03:35 PM

at war with the mystics. i love yoshimi and soft bulletin and i understand why most people hold those two in higher regard but i just dig awwtm more than those two nowadays

the13thzen 03-23-2008 11:59 PM

The album I enjoy listening to the most is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

cfletch11 02-11-2009 04:05 AM

i was heavily into clouds taste metallic for the good part of 6 months. it is mind blowing as are most of their albums when you really listen to layering of sound.

FireInCairo 02-11-2009 04:54 AM

Hey could some one hook me up with a pm for whichever album you personally consider to be the best and the best to start with please?

It would be much appreciated as I have been meaning to get into these guys for a while.

JJJ567 02-11-2009 10:56 AM

Out of the ones I heard I'd go with Yoshimi, but Transmissions is almost taking its place.

At War with the Mystics wasn't that bad.
