Has anyone ever read the Pitchfork review of Zaireeka? I always remember it because it was so retarded. The reviewer gave the album a 0.0 and he was all up in arms about the four disc thing, saying it was only geared at the wealthy because nobody owns four CD players. I remember reading it and thinking, "Does this guy not have any friends with CD players that he could invite over any experience the album as a group, the way the Flaming Lips probably intended?" |
Zaireeka does get some great attention, particularly from critics. It's getting a 33 1/3 publication. Check their wikipedia page.
I recently listened to Transmission From The Satellite Heart, and it's very good. Some of the songs hint at what they would later do with the soft bulletin, which is the album I respect the most from their discography. Yoshimi has a different feel than Soft Bulletin, but i would take the latter over the former any day. |

Jeez, what's with all the Soft Bulletin love? Complete snorefest compared to their works ca. 1991-1996.

i think soft bulletin is the sound of steven taking the main role musically, the drumming is incredible
|
People will disagree but yoshimi is def my favorite album. I've made a few memories to it so that may be the reason but I remember loving it on first listen. It's always the one I recommend to first time listeners.

I'd say it depends on the mental state. Yoshimi for a more relaxed mood and Transmissions for a more energetic mood. Those two are by far their best albums. Soft Bulletin is still pretty good but not as good.
|
Clouds Taste Metallic is most definitely my favorite.
|
The basslines of ...Pink Robots is unrivaled by anything they have put out.

well really their transition period was so much more interesting than anything else they've done. '90 through about '93 were formative (and gorgeous) years for the Lips.
don't care too much for their first three or last one though. |
I really like Christmas on Mars. Its a decent album but the movie blows my mind.

I'm surprised only like 2 people mentioned 'Clouds Taste Metallic'. I would pick that over TSB or YBTPR easily.

Default I really like Christmas on Mars. Its a decent album but the movie blows my mind. __________________ PURITY LOVE SUICIDE christmas on mars was sick but i loved every minuet. especially the band march; sick! |
I have to agree with the post above, "Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots" is their masterpiece in my humble opinion! I love every song on that album beginning to end!
|
I've only listened to Yoshimi.
But I have Soft Bulletin, just haven't listened to it yet. So I'll tell you which one is my favorite after listening to those two. |
When I was considerably younger I tried listening to The Flaming Lips, since I had heard of them by word of without having any knowledge of what they were "like", but found the music too "weird". The album I bought, listened to, disliked and subsequently lost was "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots". I can't for the life of me remember what it sounded like, but I remember not being taken in by it.
I'm sure I would like the band now since my tastes have changed quite radically (thankfully). Should I give "Yoshimi" another try or should I begin again from another point in the band's career? |
Also, I have heard the latest Animal Collective album, Merriweather Post Pavillion, which I adore, being compared to the work of The Flaming Lips. Is this a fair comparison? From what I can gather, both MPP and TFL are "crazy psychelic" and "upbeat".
|
i guess they are similar. but yes give Yoshimi another spin, it is great.
|
The Soft Bulletin and Clouds Taste Metallic are tied in my book.
|
The Soft Bulletin :)
|
Clouds Taste Metallic or TFASH.
|
I've been a fan of theirs since their debut and I've seen them in concert many times.
My favorite overall record is The Soft Bulletin but my favorite song is Halloween on the Barbary Coast on Hit to Death in the Future Head. |
The Soft Bulletin.

A tie between Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin.
