Vampire Weekend

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this band. I did a search and didn't find any threads or posts about them. Heard two of their songs today and I am really liking "Mansard Roof." Here is a link below (can not post urls yet since my post count is so low).

What do you guys think about this band?

JoniOBrien 01-23-2008 08:16 AM

Yeah great band. cape cod kwassa kwassa and a-punk are also very good songs by them. Album is out on monday in the UK not sure about America though.

quagmire740 01-24-2008 12:07 PM

all I know is they are getting a lot of hype and good reviews, I'll have to check it out

Clownbaby 01-28-2008 02:04 PM

I actually saw them on MTV Saturday night and decided to check out there stuff, not bad

Rainard Jalen 01-28-2008 02:06 PM

Well, they're album's out tomorrow, so some intense listening will soon be a-takin' place.

adidasss 01-29-2008 08:34 AM

I've got it and I can't stop listening to it. Wonderful pop music, very easy listening. There isn't a song on there that I wanted to skip. Finally, Pitchfork got something right. Link to the review.

The insanely fun video for one of the best songs on the album, A-punk:

Awesome stuff...

Ya, I've been listening to this myself. And ya, it is excellent. So much fun. I prefer it to everything else I've tried in January so far save Times New Viking and possibly that Drive-By Truckers album.

Slight off topic, I absolutely hated the vocals on that one.:\

LOL, yeah they're feckin' ghastly. But there was something altogether about it, something quite uncanny, that made it so listenable at the same time!

Clownbaby 01-30-2008 05:58 PM

Just got the album...great the whole way through....love "A-Punk" "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and "Oxford Comma"

Molecules 02-01-2008 03:07 PM

they're alright. two things are for sure: they're nothing new and they will make more money than me...
i'm not too into the current chirpy, indie-pop re-hash thing that's going on. it's like they think they're the first 'indie' band to pay attention to poppy chord progressions. Oh and it's not indie if it wasn't made on a 4-track in 1990, sorry, lol

but yeah they aren't shoving it down our throats are they?
If you really like this get yourself the CD86 compilation, takes you back to the roots. I would post the link but the bleeping forum won't let me still

enemyat_thesix 02-01-2008 03:41 PM

i saw them live a few months back; they were great

i was listening to a leak of these guys almost six months ago; old old news

Not new? Mention another band who has the same sound as this one.

Just because it's part of this "indie-pop rehash thing that's going on" does not make it derivative. They've done their own thing within that framework which distinguishes them and makes them worth talking about.

We get it, you're indier-than-thou no one cares.

adidasss 02-03-2008 04:57 AM

I love it when people do that. So why not make a thread about them and enlighten the rest of us...six months ago?

Rainard Jalen 02-03-2008 05:10 PM

anyway...this band f'cuking own

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-04-2008 01:15 AM

Annoying chirpy indie rock with some horrible whiney vocalist who sounds like he sound be in some late 90s punk pop band.

Thats my take on it anyway.

adidasss 02-04-2008 02:55 AM

Hater....

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-04-2008 03:15 AM

I'd call it indifference, they're far too bland to bother hating.

sleepy jack 02-04-2008 03:23 AM

I'm too upset over their slaughtering of Exit Music (for a Film) to listen to anything else they've done =|

enemyat_thesix 02-04-2008 09:15 AM

in any case, this band is much better than radiohead

they mainly sound like 80's talking heads to me! but god forbid I should name any new ones...people make me listen to all kinds of new bands and I never remember the names...the arrangements all seem so familiar...
Let's just say if I hadn't heard anything like this before I would be alot more surprised!
Having acquired the album since last post, I can see why they have blown up, they are lovely lovely lovely.
It's so bloody subjective. I do enjoy the album, but it's just too relentlessly fluffy to get massively excited about.
You're right though, they do muck around with the formula abit and I think the key to this is the production. Again, it's just very warm and reassuring. Could have been written for the iPod generation. :hphones:

i don't understand the comparison? Surely they're coming from two completely different places sonically

enemyat_thesix 02-05-2008 01:41 PM

quite

I just like to bash Radiohead

SATCHMO 03-18-2008 12:59 PM

Saw them perform on SNL this weekend. Thought they were extremely uninteresting, Yet that always seems to be the case lately with whatever the new hyped band happens to be.

Yeah? Which bands? Examples pls.

SATCHMO 03-18-2008 01:29 PM

I think a great recent example is The Shins. I really don't see what's so extraordinary about them.

Ok, pattern emerging. Lemme guess: you don't like the whole super-sweet extra-saccharine sugary melody-based side of the indie [baroque] pop scene. Am I right?

If so, fair enough. I agree that it's an acquired taste. It took me a while to like. The Shins are a little too sweet for my tastes I'd say, but I mean, they're clearly the best at what it is that they do.

Yes. I'm waiting for the whole phase to blow over. I do like The Arcade Fire Quite a bit though. I don't know if you file them in the same category.

Yes, and being the greatest indie pop band of the century puts them somewhere smack dab in the middle of boring mediocrity as far as music in general is concerned (IMO)

Again, the difference lies purely in how much one likes the more recent batch of indie pop. I think the current indie pop scene is, well, brilliant - one of the better things going in current indie/alternative music. Those who oppose it are automatically going to hate Vampire Weekend, they won't even recognize the 'point' that they're great melody craftsmen (i.e. what everybody else and his/her dog seems to think) out of raw hatred for the style: the melodies wouldn't resonate with such a person to begin with because they are so contrary to the style they appreciate. On the basis of what I've seen from more than a couple of friends, some people who actually like recent indie pop have just decided they hated it from a couple of songs and never downloaded the whole album... and for what reason? Because it's hyped.

The truth is that this release does stand out among very recent indie pop releases of the same sort. It is no surprise that it has been hyped - it has more catchy melodies and more [hypothetically] mainstream credentials than most of the rest of the pack.
