Just read the whole thread, and it's produced some very interesting and truthful statements.
Unfortunately, I am still unable to think of a single new (if that means the last year or two) British indie (if that means 'any guitar band that isn't metal' now) group...
Except the Young Knives, I can't help loving them (their album is this decade's 'Modern Life Is Rubbish', which personally scores high with me, being a bit of a Village Green Preserver).

Somebody pointed out the best music in the UK is now to be found in the grime & dubstep scenes, and I totally agree.
It's more 'indie' than indie, but here we are toeing the line between electronic music and guitar music...there's such a gulf between the audiences. Grime owes alot more to ragga and d&b-derived genres than hip-hop, at least musically, and dubstep is a hybrid of UK garage, d&b and old-skool dub aesthetics.

Edit: has anybody been taking stock of the increasingly blurred line between British (and American) indie and the god-awful hipster-fodder funky house?
I have been scared away from modern indie long since, but I do follow a bit still and I'm talking about bands with horrible, supposedly edgy names like 'Does it Offend You, Yeah?'
What do people think?


It's a far cry from the indie of old...the plaid shirts, four tracks and adventurousness of the pavement and Sebadoh ilk...not to mention the nu-psychedelia of shoegaze...
Again, somebody already mentioned this and I agree that the cheapening of the medium with the advent of broadband, file-sharing and social networking has done more damage than good, but if somebody could revive my faith in new guitar music I would be more than grateful!

I'm a bit biased as their guitarist/songwriter is a close friend, but he also happens to be my musical wet dreams realised.
Yet another example of great potential never given a chance to breath I think

Cribs are the best band in England today.
Maps are amazing, So are British Sea Power. Babyshambles and Dirty pretty things are good bands too, Sons and daughters, Lightspeed champion, Foals.. theres lots of good indie bands from the UK out there today.

Ive slowly drifted away from Indie somewhat but personally the last album I loved that could be classed as indie was Hope Of The States - The Lost Riots.

Nope...theres definitely nothing else coming to mind.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Hey, I rather like the Babyshambles...although perhaps that's due to the fact that I had a strange obsession with Pete Doherty at one time.....but they aren't that bad....

The Babyshambles record was very, very disappointing I thought. Very mediocre record, and that may be too generous.

I didnt mind The Libertines TOO much and I think Pete Doherty is a lot more talented than he gets credit for as a songwriter. However the dude is an absolute tit. What a waster indeed!

Aw, I was so in love with him for a short whille...I thought he was the most amazing person ever....don't know What I was thinking....but the album was a huge letdown....The Libertines were a lot better....meh

I hated The Libs when I first heard them, which would have been around the release of the first full length album. I warmed to them a little over time and I've heard more or less everything there is to be heard but havent bought any of it.

I did, however get a hold of about 9 CDs a friend had which was full of acoustic sessions, practices, live performances, demo's etc covering the Libs era and early Babyshambles before the release of the first record and was actually quite impressed with a lot of it. I gained more respect for Pete Doherty as a songwriter by listening to this stuff.

I cant find it in me to say anything more positive about him though, I have to admit.

Yes but that's the thing, you're willing to admit that the appeal ultimately lies in Pete! If it's the case that you wouldn't be paying them much attention if Pete wasn't there, then you're not taking them seriously.

The way I see it, Babyshambles is a band that exists merely for the sake of Pete-loving. Which is fine, I mean, the best of luck to him and all. I just don't think people who claim to take them as a 'serious' proposition can really be being entirely honest.
