I know that, a few of the bands i listed are now defunct. My point was theres been a lot of good stuff to emerge out of Britain in recent years.

Yeah, I know sorry, wan't trying to pull you up there, though it may have sounded like that, I was just venting my frustration at their split. I found them particularly good!

I could go on, theres so much decent stuff out there...

Most of those bands are terrible. It's not a coincidence that hardly any of them have made any waves at all with the wider indie community.

Los Campesinos, on the other hand, are amazing.

Sneer 04-30-2009 04:30 PM

Have you even listened to any of them before casting them off as 'terrible'? And 'Amazing' is a bit over zealous dont you think? But then again opinion is opinion, something you seem to have no concept of.

And 'It's not a coincidence that hardly any of them have made any waves at all with the wider indie community.' is just moronic. Ignoring the fact that half of those bands have achieved popularity, some bands simply may not have the means to gain such exposure.

Stu. Anybody worth sh1t gets noticed. It's how it works. It's how it's always worked. As a Brit myself and traditionally very much a part of "the scene", I have listened to almost ALL of those bands and found the vast majority to be derivative crap doing nothing at all interesting and with about as much actual *songwriting* talent as a turnip.

If you want I will go through the whole list one by one and highlight the few good ones from the many bad, and explain why.

And yes, Los Campesinos! do own, and are one of the few genuinely exciting talents to come out the British indie rock scene in the last few years.

Cripes, how on EARTH you could include Cajun Dance Party is completely beyond me.

Also, Les Incompetents? Firstly, they broke up a rather long time ago (I was very close friends with their drummer so know the inside story pretty well), secondly, do you really consider a bunch of Libertines-aping faux-trendy private school tools with a frontman who cannot play a single instrument or sing A LICK to be a good band?

Funny thing is, Les Inc were probably better than 95% of the other bands you mentioned in that list.

Sneer 04-30-2009 05:40 PM

We've had this very same thing before with a list i made of bands on the Hardcore forum, pretty much you citing every band i listed as generic, derivitive crap, passing your opinion off as fact etc etc etc. Your superiority complex is irritating to say the least. I'm well aware that Les Inc broke up a couple of years back, as i said earlier, the list was based on bands that have been or were about within recent years. They wrote infectious, slightly off-kilter pop songs that appealed to my ears. Lamenting them as Libertines rip offs is just lazy. Great you know a drummer, indie cred to you, sorry for ever crossing you. Please, i suggest you stop passing off your opinion as the unchallengeable truth. You going through listing the reasons why you hate or love every band on the list isnt going to alter my opinion a jot, i dont value your opinion THAT much im afraid.

How you can label the Wilkommen Collective as terrible alone is bewildering. Twisted Charm, These New Puritans, Foals, Youthmovies, Dartz!... all fresh and exciting. And i really dug the Colourful Life, so deal with it. I' dont care if you're English and 'in with the scene', so am i, so what?

Dude, I never tried to put my opinion above yours. You're perfectly entitled to like all the bands you choose.

My point was simple. You mentioned a few bands who have earnt some reputation, and an overwhelming number who have not. Most of those bands who have failed to gain any attention in the wider indie community have failed to do so for a good reason: they're just not making particularly interesting music (or if they are, then they lack the songwriting dexterity to pull it off). Most of them are, and I'm sorry to say it, far more than substantially derivative. Both the claims in this paragraph have objectivity in them. I'd wager my bottom dollar that you are more than well aware of the basis for the claims I'm making. If you listen to those bands, you can easily see what I'm talking about. Again, bro, I'm not trying to make an argument. You're welcome to enjoy what you like. I only don't like claims that the British indie scene is all well and good when, to put it simply, it's evidently just not the case.

And for the last time, yeah, some of the bands you mentioned are pretty good. Just don't pretend that the whole lot answer to that description.

Peace.

No, they dont, music is a subjective experience, each person interprets what they hear differently. You think Los Campesinos are amazing, but, though i think they're decent, i think 'amazing' is an extreme overstatement. I disagree with you on several things, but thats what music taste is all about. My one problem with you is this habit you seem to have of, as i've already said, passing your opinion off as fact.

Lets leave it at that.

That something is very derivative is not a subjective element. That one thing is a carbon copy of something else can be ascertained objectively. The same is true of something that is substantially different from other things. Again, it can be detected objectively. Similarity and differentness are objective criteria.
