it's mediocre, coffee-table hip hop, to me. I've never been anything but bored stiff by that album. He obviously has a talent for splicing up dusty old vinyl and **** but I never understood why people were so blown away by that one

Check out Laika. It`s a female singer(Margaret Fiedler) with a producer(Guy Fixsen)doing jazzy electronica/trip hop.One critic called them 'techno torch'.They did`nt get the attenton they deserved. The albums Silver Apples Of The Moon and Sound Of The Satellites are good introductions.

I love it because it has some of the coolest sampling i've heard, he literally chops and pastes everything up, its amazing that all he used was a drum machine over it. The songs are incredible too, i'm always in the mood for Number Song and Mutual Slump, while Midnight In a Perfect World is just brilliant.

If the first track with it's jazzy feel doesn't blow you away, the second one definitely will! Especially when Garm's alien like vocals kick in. It's like walking in this cold dark ghost city, all alone 12 in the night. The first 5 tracks are superb. You might not like it from the 6th track onwards(as it's more in the vein of A Quick Fix of Melancholy which i think is quite good), but imo, it's just the way they experiment. I don't think they had the idea of "Trip-Hop" in their mind while making this. Just Dark Ambient. I definitely had a great experience listening to it 1 in the morning with lights off (well, it's say's Headphones and darkness recommended in the booklet anyways) Last edited by Demonoid; 08-21-2008 at 03:45 PM. |
