Midlake

The trials of Van Occupanther

They're from Denton, Texas and play wonderful mellow music, very early seventies ; I'm not very familiar with that kind of music, so maybe one can compare it to Crosby, Stills and Nash ( seriously depressed mind you ), a lot of harmonic vocals, early seventies bass lines and trumpet, lots of piano and the likes. This is their second album and it occupies a lot of "Best of 2006" lists, and for good reason. The vocals are reminiscent of My morning jacket, at times they even remind me of Thom Yorke ( Radiohead ). In short, it's the essence of fall captured on disk. Well worth a try for those prone to loneliness and nostalgia. Similar artist on last.fm include: M Ward, Grandaddy and Sufjan Stevens.

Bump!!!
Midlake - head home ( youtube video) - one of the best songs about nostalgia ever and you're heartless bastards if you don't get that!

If it weren't for the vocals these would cheesy unlistenable crap. Luckily the instrumental and vocals fit together perfectly making something pretty catchy and enjoyble.

I read about them In Stuart Murdoch's "Diary" on the Belle & Sebastian website. He said that midlake is to Fleetwood Mac what Stillwater is to Led Zeppelin. I'm not crazy about Fleetwood Mac...But Stuart seemed to like them so I feel like I should give 'em a try (haven't yet though).

Milkmaid Grand Army EP is good, i'm listening to (and uploading) Bamnan and Slivercork right now.

Thanks for this.

I have the album (The trials of Van Occupanther) downloaded and gave it a listen ages ago. It didn't appeal to me at the time, then I heard a track on a compilation I have and thought "this isn't bad" without knowing what it was and when I checked to see...

...Head Home.

adidasss 03-03-2007 05:07 PM

Ahh...awesome song innit? Melancholy at it's best. They're one of those bads whose sound just takes a bit of time to digest...but it makes it worth wile.

i've had 'trials' for a couple weeks now and i've been listening to it constanly.
it definitely is an album that just gets better with each listen. my favorite song was 'young bride' then 'roscoe' now it's 'in this camp'.

Sorry, didn't bother to look at the bottom of the page. And it's common practice to include an up in a band thread.
