After Murder Park by The Auteurs blows The Bends out of the water in regard to songwriting , atmosphere and around general goodness , and it shows just how one dimensional The Bends is and that came out around the same time.
But because they didn't have a couple of catchy hit singles nobody really noticed.

The Auteurs were great but IMO the Bends is when RH opened up there musical attack and perfected their light/heavy slow/fast time changes within songs. They had atmosheric tones, acoustic guitars, and vicioius electric guitars and drums, often within the same song. Thom would sing like a choir boy one moment, then switch to a wicked snarl.

Just because they were good doesn't mean they weren't your typical 90's Alt Rock band. Stylistically they were an anthemic rock band in the vein of U2. Just a thousand times better.
