I don't even think I would class JOY DIVISION as punk, but that's just nit picking. DAY OF THE LORDS is my favourite track of theirs, great atmosphere.
Any fans should check out the film 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE which is the story of FACTORY records who had some great bands on it's roster-JOY DIVISION, NEW ORDER etc.

Also there is a film about IAN CURTIS'S life due out very soon with an unknown playing CURTIS-it's got very positive reviews.

My personal favorite New Order album is Low-Life. Urban is right, Substance is as good a starting point as any. Movement is very underrated. Picking my favorite JD track is tough. Twenty-Four Hours is the song that really got me hooked. New Dawn Fades is also a great track. To hear more of their punk beginnings check out the Warsaw album, there is a very interesting version of Transmission on it.

I just got Les Bains Douches on red vinyl before I left to come to the desert. Not that that's super rare or cool or anything but it's still pretty sweet ass.

I prefer Unknown Pleasures slightly more than Closer, although they act well as opposing albums with a different sound. New Dawn Fades is the one! The intro, the whining guitar, the vocals, everything about that song is perfect.
