The Horrors
Hmm, with Strange House being relased on the 15th here in the states, I was just curious as to how many fans we've got of this British Psychobilly import. Thoughts and opinions?
|
Not a very big fan... No offense to you or anyone else that likes them. I just can't get into them.
|
bloody awful. they procured a record deal purely because of their image and their music ranges from mediocre freakbeat rip off to just plain sh!t. Plus, their not psychobilly in the slightest.
|
I think all the above comments are a bit harsh, even if "Psychobilly" isnt to your taste. I find them entertaining in a dumb, mucking-about kind of way. Fingers crossed I'll be seeing them when they support the Gossip & New Young Pony Club in Manchester at the International Festival in July - in the ballot for free tickets.

The Horrors
Obviously one of the most exciting bands to come out of Britain in a while. They've divided opinions, mainly for their image rather than their actual music. I'm a fan of theirs, and Strange House was a bloody good debut album.
And oh yeah, they're the TITS live. |
Have you not discovered the wonders of the search function?
|
Apologies, I haven't been on this thing in quite a while...
well yeah, I'd say it is definitely style over substance, but i do enjoy their music. Their lyrics are also surprisingly clever-very book smart, I'd say. |
I used to like them, if you listen to them you can get used to them. but i feel that the amount of publicity theyve had from magazines such as NME has tipped people opinions with out actually listening to them :)
|
Well I suppose the majority of people looked at their hair and thought 'wankers' and pigeon-holed them.
Robert Smith syndrome. Although don't think their music is anywhere near as good... |
I have to bump these guys, the new album has recently been released and i was left utterly shocked at how good it actually is. I brushed this band off as a trendy fad; a flash in the pan, but they've progressed unbelievably since their debut. All i can say is Primary Colours is fucking good. Its a psychedelic Joy Division meets Suicide by way of Jesus & Mary Chain
The quite awesome Sea Within a Sea |
That is such a quality tune! Noit really into the first album but I'll be buying the second one on the basis of that tune! It's whopper!

That song does nothing for me, and it's usually not a particularly good sign when you can pinpoint the band's sound to a T by citing their influences.

Anyway, i knew this wouldn't receive too many responses; it's the horrors, too fad for the mature listener. Shame, it's a fine album. |
what is their best album if you just want to start listening?
|
Primary Colours
|
I just saw these guys live tonight. Utterly boring. They had no variety or personality. Next.
|
I just listened to "Sea Within A Sea" and I'm completely taken aback by the sheer idiocy of the early fandom of this band, and the tremendous improvement they've achieved. I gave "Gloves" a listen and the look of the band in their early days made me want to punch them all in the face. Seriously, I don't think I've seen such a change for the better.
Seriously. |
Yeah during their early years they were very much style over substance. But going from that to Primary Colours is one of the biggest improvements I've seen any band make, it's hard to believe it's the same band. Skying was an improvement again on Primary Colours and was one of my favourite albums of 2011. They're actually making the music they want to make now rather playing up to an image.
They basically went from this To this To this |
So they went from a slightly interesting noisy sound to a completely boring mainstream load of nothing.
Well done Horrors. |

Their debut album was poor and most people who have actually listened to them seem to have the same view. Their last two albums were a significant improvement and most people who have actually listened to them would certainly agree. So yes well done Horrors. |
I have said three bands are boring, not really my fault you guys at discussing them.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of this site...?

A sentence long, snarky jab? Not really much a critical observation, and certainly not much of a counterpoint to the overall general opinion about this band. Well, I kind of dig "Sheena Is A Parasite", but other than that the early stuff doesn't really grab me. |
I was obviously not trying to critique them as a band. However, if I want to come on my favourite music forum and call an artist "boring" I think I should be able to do so without being asked to post elsewhere.
Also, I agree that their first album is poor, but it was slightly interesting for a semi-mainstream act, whereas their newest album is pretty much ready for radio Indie Pop that most of us must surely be completely bored of by now? Maybe the second album is their best, we will see. |
Their first album was terrible. If Skying is your idea of vapid mainstream music, then you should be bloody grateful for it, because my idea of vapid mainstream music is something much more egregious.
|
I did say mainstream indie music. Radio friendly nothingness.
It isn't terrible by any means, and whilst I am slightly thankful that bands like The Horrors and Foster The People are mainstream, I could do without. |
Ah, see, where I live, the words "radio" and "mainstream" mean ultimately the same thing, as there are no listening options. Nothing like 6Music, for example.
|
Yeah, they are interchangeable words where I am as well, but we have Pop/Dance/RnB stations and Alternative Indie Rock stations, that parade bands like The Killers and new Kings of Leon as the kings of anti-pop... Pretty depressing.
The Horrors may sound reasonably cool to some, but they are basically part of the force fed indie radio diet. |
Yeah you should be very thankful that you have any choice in radio. Where I live it's either a station that plays Creedence,Stones,Aerosmith,so on or the one that plays Creed,Limp Bizkit,Shinedown. Everything else is modern radio country or Beyonce style pop. Needless to say, i don't listen to much radio.
|
That's the same choice anyone has. Luckily enough, the crappy indie rock station occasionally plays some Radiohead or Stone Roses.
|
I remember catching The Horrors at the 100 Club some time around the release of Strange House, and they were awful. I consequently discarded them as a trite fad, destined to adorn the front cover of the NME for a few months then fade into obscurity.
Needless to say, their progression into a band with artistic merit has surprised me; both Primary Colours and Skying are great albums. Such a far cry from the days of Faris 'Rotter' and the black face paint. |
ther is a fan here ;)
