french-canadian band from Montreal, sorta like a blend of Broken social scene, The arcade fire and Wolf parade...only with french lyrics....pretty good i say...

never heard of them

adidasss 01-09-2007 08:41 AM

Oh c'mon! This is one of the best indie albums of 2006! Is it because they sing in french?!

Timorous Vince 01-09-2007 10:10 AM

Never saw this thread, obviously. But I enjoyed that album - they were disappointing live, though.

I find that hard to believe.

Hard to believe that I enjoyed the album? I assure you, I did! Lol.

adidasss 01-09-2007 05:51 PM

Well I don't believe you. ;)

adidasss 01-29-2009 08:55 AM

Bump. New album is ooot. I'd say it's slightly less epic than Trompe L'oeil but still a healthy dose of cabaret-prog-pop craziness.

Listen to the lead single: http://cdn.stereogum.com/mp3/Malajub...20Ursuline.mp3

A taste of Trompe L'oeil, for those totally not in the know:

Malajube - Pate Filo

And if that doesn't grab you, their most popular song:

Malajube - Montreal -40°C

Crazy good, I know. Now get Trompe L'oeil.

adidasss 01-29-2009 09:03 AM

Oh, I didn't know they made a vid for this song. It's my favorite from Trompe...so...melancholically epic...

Malajube - Etienne d'aout

Four answers in 3 years is a good average.:D

That band is not really my taste, but yes, i think that you don't have much more answers because they sing in French, or more generally, because they don't sing in English.

Do you like handball?:D

adidasss 01-29-2009 10:20 AM

Well I don't know french either but the music should be universal. Sigur ros is crazy popular, and nobody understands a word they're saying. Whatever, I shall not be deterred. We can talk about how we kicked your asses in handball until someone else sees this thread...:D

Oh incidentally, are they at all popular in France? And can you recommend some better francophone alternatives? I'm just really liking French with rock right now.

I'm waiting for the finale! Karabatic will be your executioner. :p:
For the rest, it's a question of taste but you can start with Noir désir.

Don't hesitate to tell if you like or not, and if not, what kind of music you prefer

henry 01-29-2009 05:12 PM

yeah saw them live a couple times, god i love living in montreal

Well I like the drums but it feels a little too early nineties. I can't really judge by just a few songs. I'll try des Visages des Figures, apparently Manu Chao collaborated on it.

I was thinking something more...experimental? Or contemporary...

joyboyo53 01-29-2009 06:24 PM

j'aime ceci

i can hardly tell they are singing in french, except for the fact that i cant understand what they are saying.

I'm frankly sorry for Croatia adidasss.:(
It was your world championship, but at the end, the best team has won. :D

adidasss 02-01-2009 02:49 PM

Haha...yeah, I actually went to see Australia instead, but I still suffered...;) Congratulations....:)

Yay for another bump...:D

lucifer_sam 02-02-2009 02:00 PM

Damn fine band, just started listening. Their new album is awesome.

I find it refreshing to hear bands sing in their native languages.

adidasss 02-02-2009 04:05 PM

I think it's safe to say that Labyrinthes will be topping my end of year lists...fantastic record. I can't stop playing Ursuline in my head...I love how someone described their singing as just another instrument, sort of soft and unobtrusive...

lucifer_sam 02-02-2009 04:36 PM

Their first album is very different from their other two, much more aggressive and uptempo. But damn, these guys have some chops. And I agree, Labyrinthes is easily one of the best indie albums of the year so far.

adidasss 02-02-2009 04:40 PM

Yeah I didn't take to Le compte complet, most of the songs are short and forgettable. They came into their stride when they began to experiment more.
