To be fair, I don't even know how the two get compared so often, other than the fact that they both shot into fame around the same time. Oasis are pure and simple rock, a territory Blur has never really delved into (maybe they experimented with it on '13', but that was after 'The Battle of Britpop' anyway). Blur's closest contemporaries are Pulp, another massively underrated band from the 90's.
Oasis have pretty much overshadowed everything else that has come out from that decade, and it's unfair because nothing they did was ever that revolutionary. Blur and Pulp's influence on the music world is something that will never fade away, while we're seeing the fruit of Oasis' womb (The Enemy, The Courteeners) die a terrible death. |

Just because a band spawns a lot of bands not quite up to it, doesn't mean they were not making good music. If a band can be responsible for kids wanting to make music then kudos.
I wouldn't say Pulp were underrated, Different Class for me epitomises the whole Britpop era better than any other album, but I don't really think any of their other stuff is that great, and they are recognised as being one of the best bands of the 90's from Britain. Quote:

Oasis suck, fair enough you cant take the first album away from them, but they should never have got as big & as overblown as they were & surprisingly still are...
I think they just came along at the right time as it was all dance music that dominated at that time & they were seen as 'the saviours of british rock' or whatever, whereas it was really Suede who started the whole Britpop thing off but of course they dont get the credit they deserve. If you look at a lot of their contemporaries who were seen as being 'beneath them' are actually a lot better- Cast,Pulp especially, The Verve, Kula Shaker, Shack, Manic Street Preachers, Charlatans, Black Grape plus more. I actually heard that when Oasis were first starting out, people in Manchester were saying that Liam Gallagher was totally ripping off Tim Burgess from the Charlatans. Then when Oasis got big people heard the Charlatans & thought it was the other way about! I also thought this when I first heard the Charlatans album 'Tellin' Stories' until I backtracked and found this out Im not that big on Blur but I do like Damon Albarn's ideas (Gorillaz & Good Bad & The Queen) & think he is a much more gifted musician than the Gallaghers- who are just a couple of boring, talentless knob-ends. I must in this case say Blur just for the simple fact that they re-defined the band with their last album 'Think Tank' & also went on to do even better things- namely Gorillaz & Good Bad & The Queen. Also Graham Coxon's solo career is pretty cool at points. So for this reason alone I must say Blur. |

Kula Shaker?? You can't be serious!! Liam was actually ripping off Ian Brown, Noel pointed him out to Liam at Spike Island in 1990 and told him that was how to do it! Although in the video for ''The Only One I Know'', from 1991, the resemblance is there, so how anyone could say Burgess ripped him off is beyond me.
I know why people don't like Oasis, but I will always love them. They made me want to listen to bands like The Who, The Beatles, The Stone Roses, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. When I was ten years old I bought the Live Forever single and that made me start to listen to the music I still love today. I've almost every song they've recorded and there is very very few I don't like. Thats not a common occurrance for me with many artists. I do like the good, the bad and the queen but don't really like the gorillaz. I agree with you on Think Thank! |

Yeah, I dont think Liam Gallagher resembles Ian Brown in any way shape or form TBH. As for the 'Only One I Know' video, yes the Charlatans were taking off the Roses in their early days but the thing about them is that they changed their style with every album they put out. Just look at 'Tellin' Stories' which people would say was them ripping off Oasis, but the real fact is that Liam Gallagher copied Tim Burgess & then it just so happened that it was Oasis who hit the big time. I dont totally hate Oasis. I just despise them for all their arrogance & disrespect for music in general. Also I find their music far too self indulgent at times. Ill let you in on a wee secret. I used to actually be a really big Oasis fan up till a couple of years ago when I stopped listening to them and started listening to the likes of Neil Young, Dylan & just exploring a lot more artists. My attitude towards music in general has changed since I stopped listening to them. I still like their B-Sides, although dont really bother to listen to them anymore. The B Sides were always my favourite, especially 'Sad Song'. Ive since learnt that their music is pretty shallow, the vocals pretty mediocre & just in general there are far too many more interesting, talented & better artists out there for me to be listening to Oasis anymore. |

I still maintain that Oasis were great until their third album when it all totally went to their head... the egos, the drugs, the fights, whatever.... all got pretty tired at that point because the music got overbloated, repetitive and full of the expected rock cliches that we've all come to dread and tire of...
But maybe, just maybe, for a couple of years and a couple of albums they actually were one of the best bands in the world as far as melodic stadium rock goes. They certainly had a big sound and some really big choruses to match. I almost wish I didn't get rid of my copies of (Whats the Story?) Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe.... because in hindsight, they were actually pretty strong albums with very few dud songs on them.
