sorry, i know there's a thread but it's a sonofabitch to track down...
anyways i'm listening to return to my cookie mountain and i think it's fantastic ( especially playhouses )...anyone heard it? is it supposed to be the new record? because i can't find it on amazon.com ( it says it's not released yet ) if so, can anyone compare it to the previous album? i haven't heard it... and what would be the difference between experimental rock and prog rock?

Experiemental has a more atonal style, and more avant garde influences as oposed to prog, which often showcases a more classical, jazz or folk oriented sound... Though prog is also very avant garde based, as in the case of Can.
Prog overall has certain distinct influences, which can vary, depending on the artist, but many bands share a similar sound or approach (check the prog ed thread, for furher information), while experiemental rock dosen't exactly have any truly definable characteristics, experiemental music is simply any kind of band who are truly distinct from any currently known music form, so it's really more of a term for musicians that don't share characteristics of any conventional genre, rather than being an actual genre itself... However prog can be considered a type of experiemental rock, and many so called experiemental rock bands can fall into the prog category... Genres like post rock could fall into either category. |

it's just that one song, it's got a beat and it's sorta funky...the rest of the songs are pretty much like desperate youth...

I really like the new album, playhouses has a new health rock feel to it, the rest sound like an improved version of desperate youth mainly due to the addition of a drummer who has been touring with them now for awhile but wasnt featured on desperate youth.
