This song is a little more depressing to me then sad.. But Creep by Radiohead..
It's not exactly sad, but Syd Barrett's 'Long Gone' always sends a chill down my spine. Such a great, underrated track of his.

"Company Calls Epilogue" by Death Cab for Cutie
This song gets to me every time. Gibbard is a master storyteller... |
Yes he is... and the way Death Cab's music and lyrics gel together always seems to get to me too... songs like Styrofoam Plates from the Photo Album have a tency to leave me all choked up with emotion... brilliant songwriting, IMO...
The Photo Album, The Forbidden Love EP, Transatlanticism, and Plans all have such great emotion in it. I just couldn't find it in Narrow Stairs... The Ice is Getting Thinner just didn't cut it for me.
But, I don't blame him, cause if I had Zooey Deschanel, I wouldn't be sad either! |
I dunno I actually kinda prefer Narrow Stairs to Plans... but that could be just my warped brain / taste... hehehehehe....
Haha everyone has their own taste. I guess I just didn't feel the emotion in Narrow Stairs. Grapevine Fires and Long Division were pretty good, but I had more favorites from Plans.
p.s. It might be because I love piano melodies :) |
"Rosie", by me.

"Come On, Die Young" - Mogwai...
I'm still not sure on which side of the "Indie" line this falls...but "Goddamn You Jim" by the Felice Brothers.
Morning Rise-Whipping Boy
I feel like this sort of thing hits more on a personal level, but "Stone in Focus" by Aphex Twin evokes a strong feeling of loneliness in me. Reminds me of being a kid when everything was simple...
In terms of indie music though I'd check out Rebellion Lies by Arcade Fire for an easy one to attach some emotions to. |
Here's one
"Save Yourself" by Sensefield is a good one. Check it out!
"Open Arms" by Journey and "I am in love with you" by Imogen Heap. :)
The other day, I looked in on my 2 year old daughter while she was sleeping...she fell asleep watching "Pinocchio" and the menu music was playing the strings from "When You Wish Upon a Star"...it utterly destroyed me..
John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens is absolutely tragic. It's about the tragic life of the serial killer. I also think Pink Bullets by the Shins is pretty sad too. Oh and Miss Misery by Elliot Smith of course, pretty emo, but he did kill himself. This isn't really indie but Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt I find pretty devastating.
Thirty Three by the Smashing Pumpkins... makes me think ALOT about the year just gone, or going, and the incredible changes, upheaval I went through in my 33rd year of life.... it' been one heck of a ride, really, and I have to say I leave this year gone by with a feeling of melancholy, but hope... after everything, I am here and feeling fine...

"Six O'clock News" by John Prine is up there.
Just read these lyrics: Wanda had a baby in nineteen fifty one. The father was stranger and a stranger was the son. Call that child James Lewis, call these rooms a home. Changing all them diapers polish all that chrome. C'mon, baby, spend the night with me All around the schoolyard playing all the games Running, laughing back and forth the kid with two first names Stranger in the closet, lock the diary The past is running faster singing harmony C'mon, baby, spend the night with me "God bless this kitchen" said the knick-knack shelf "The dinner's almost ready Go and wash yourself" Jimmy's growing up now and Wanda's growing old The time is growin' shorter the nights are long and cold C'mon, baby, spend the night with me Sneaking in the closet and through the diary Now, don't you know all he saw was all there was to see The whole town saw Jimmy on the six o'clock news His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes C'mon, baby, spend the night with me C'mon, baby, spend the night with me |
Oddly enough... Sad Peter Pan by the Smashing Pumpkins.
Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark
"Burden" by Opeth is pretty sad-but I love that song
The saddest song I've ever heard is probably Empire! Empire!- How To Stay Afloat in a Sea of Change
"Never Meant" - American Football
Gets to you every time doesn't it? |
Into Temptation by Crowded House and Better Be Home Soon, from the same album, by the same band.... Temple of Low Men, one of the most melancholy albums, with it' heavy reflections on infedility, loneliness, struggle with fame, wealth, alienation. Also one of their most underrated, brilliant albums, in my opinion...
hmm. maybe some interpol song?
Interpol do indeed have some sad songs...

That last verse is so sad. |
I find there's a difference between a song that's sad and a one that's absolutely miserable, so i'm not really sure what's wanted here. Still:
I Know It's Over by The Smiths is a brilliant sad tune. "And as i climb into an empty bed...oh well, enough said" Suffer Little Children by The Smiths is deliciously haunting Asleep has been mentioned here already (had to do it again, sorry Rickenbacker) Dress Rehearsal Hag by Leonard Cohen is absolutely bloody miserable Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen has a sad feeling to it (it's freaking genius too) Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was by Radiohead just has that full sound and great lyrics that can induce a coma Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead just makes you want to scream out Dagger by Slowdive is pretty sad I always listen to The End by the Doors when i feel miserable, but i don't think it classifies as a "sad song" per se. It qualifies as bloody amazing tho, and that's enough for me. The Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd. Oh you've got to listen to this one... And these are just out of the top of my head. I know some might not be indie, but comon, can you blame me? :) |
I always thought Waisted Time, by Skid Row was sad. (Overdose on drugs..thats sad!) And there was a song in the 70s, caint remember by who, 'Sad Eyes'. That song was as sad as Bruce Springsteens vocals!
answer is obvious. American Football - Never Meant.
that and everything by iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook. |
Most of Hospice would probably qualify.
hurt by nine inch nails always hits me...probably his most beautiful song imo
Yeah, good call bungalow :)
I've had that album for a while and i always get stuck on kettering...brilliant song. Gotta give the whole thing a listen once and for all tho. |
Never be the same - RED
Pedro the Lion - June 18, 1976
Kindness of Strangers, by Nick Cave. That is a sad-ass song :(
