Sleater-Kinney
what'dya think? i quite liked one song, can't remember which one it is, from The woods and decided to download the entire album because it reminded me very much of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs....i've listened to the album once ...i'm gonna listen to it a bit more....they rock ....for a chick band....;)
|
I've heard one song off of that, 'Rollercoaster', and liked it a lot, never got round to finding out more about them though.
|
They are very heavy for my tastes, but if you are into more shrieking fem-rock then they are your band. I can see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs similarities especially if you don't listen to the whole album, but unlike the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Sleater-K is just too noisy and crashing opposed to Karen O.'s intermintent screeching mixed with quiet reflectiveness.
|
i had there album and or EP? and i deleted yesterday haha so what does that tell you?
|
Ok, got 'The Woods' and it rocks to high-heaven, theres an 11-minute epic called 'Lets Call It Love' which is to die for.
Their song 'One Beat' is really addictive too. |
i have the album.. listened a couple times and promptly forgot about it... will be seeing them over the summer tho
|
This is my favorite band. I own all seven of their albums. Mostly a fan of their stuff when they were on the label Kill Rock Stars. Dig Me Out and The Hot Rock are the albums I would recommend to start with. Even though I think The Woods is an amazing album, I don't think you can truly appreciate it unless you are familiar with their older work.
|
Dig Me Out is an incredible record. I usually don't dig this kind of music, but there's something amazingly addictive about that album.
|
I've heard one song of theirs before and I really can't remember what it was called. Great tune though, they're on my 'to investigate further' list

Okay, I actually went through the effort to search for our Sleater-Kinney thread, because frankly I was very tired of never posting in it.
Sleater-Kinney might be one of my favorite of the 90's rock bands. They just have a sound I really dig. There might be better guitarists in other groups, but the guitar sound they get on their string of late-90's albums has always hit me perfectly. I also like the lack of a bass player, but beyond that I can't quite figure out what I love so much about them. I have all their albums, but Hot Rock, Dig Me Out, and the Woods are my favorites. Need to listen to One Beat more to know how much I like it, and All Hand On the Bad One kind of fizzles out around halfway so I don't end up listening to it much anymore. Any other fans of Sleater-Kinney on MB? |
One Beat is one of their best albums, you should certainly give it better listen. All of their albums apart from their patchy self-titled debut are great albums, you know what you're going to get on each of them and they certainly don't let you down. They're one of the most instantly-recognisable bands of the late-90's and early-00's.
By the way what is everyone's opinion on Wild Flag's album? It didn't particularly grab my attention. |
Yeah...Wild Flag hasn't done much for me. I didn't dislike what I heard but it didn't have a sound I particularly fell in love with. I still intend to give it more attention because I think there is something there, but was a bit of a disappointment. Would still like to see them live for Carrie and Janet, though.
The Corin Tucker Band released their second album pretty recently. I haven't checked out either of their albums but I at least hear this new one is better than their first one. I hear great things about One Beat but I was always kind of saving it until I was bored with the rest of the Sleater-Kinney library and would want a new album to listen to by them. I will certainly be listening to it eventually but for now I'm rationing the experience. |
The song 'Romance' is a good tune, but it only stands out because the rest of the album seemed so formulaic and uninteresting. I haven't checked out the Corin Tucker Band yet but I'll get around to them at some stage.
I must listen The Hot Rock a bit more, I think it's my most neglected S-K album. I usually go for either Dig Me Out, One Beat or The Woods when I want my fix. |
One of my favourite bands of the 90's too, i always have a soft spot for punk influenced alt rock and Sleater Kinney's sound just hits that spot so perfectly. I love their sound. Call the Doctor is my favourite album of theirs closely followed up be Dig Me Out, i just prefer the heavy punk sound of Call the Doctor which was toned down a bit on Dig Me Out.
|
To be honest, I need to listen to Call the Doctor more. I don't think I prefer it to their post-Dig Me Out work, but I don't remember disliking it at all!

'Call the Doctor' was the first Sleater-Kinney album i heard which might have made it extra special for me. I am more of a punk loving guy so that record will hold a more special place for me over their more indie sounding later albums. I've yet to hear their latest material and to be honest i'm still fairly new to the Sleater Kinney party, i only just 'discovered' them early this year when i came across their Call the Doctor LP in a record shop. Picked it up on the whim as I heard good things about Sleater Kinney despite not listening to them much previously plus i've always been partial to the all girl alternative bands of the 80's/90's, it was more than worth it, i've played that LP countless times and its quickly become one of my favourite albums ever. |

give 'Call the Doctor' another listen.
I agree with you on S-K although the Breeders do come a close second for me |
They are truly missed. "All Hands on the Bad One" and "One Beat" are my favourite, and if "The Woods" didn't have that loud and saturated sound, it would be the third in my list. I prefer their latest work to their first albums.
|
I used to be bugged by the sound of the Woods but it kind of grew on me. I mean, it's over the top and makes me think of live gigs played on terrible sound systems, but cranked up as high as they can. It'd be nice to be able to hear the songs without that loudness for a change, but I can dig it as part of the album.
For me I think it'd be... 1. The Hot Rock 2. The Woods 3. Dig Me Out 4. All Hands on the Bad One I don't know the rest of the albums well enough to include them. I actually forgot that I bought One Beat on vinyl recently so I should really be listening to that more. It sounded good from what I remember, though. |
The Woods is the perfect example of a great album being crippled somewhat by excessively-loud mastering. And of course who produced it only Dave Fridmann who was also responsible for the equally loud Flaming Lips album At War With The Mystics.
It does lend a scuzzy feel to the music like it was recorded live, however listening to it through headphones can be a bit too much to bear at times. I think the best way to listen to it is through speakers with the volume cranked up a bit. |
A new single out as well as a new album and tour in the new year! I seriously thought that I'd never hear from these girls again.
I like the new song but the video could have been better. |
Huge fan - one of the great ROCK bands of the last 20 years. Forget that 'for a bunch of girls' shyte. All of their records are great but 'The Woods' is an amazing album. One of my all time favorites. I think the reason it is so loud is that it was intended to be cathartic and abrasive and in your face (and it sounds AMAZING on Vinyl!!!). If it had been a bunch of guys who had done it, I bet it would have been a lot more popular. I admit I am something of an aficionado of girl garage bands, and that's how I found S-K in the first place, but they've quickly transcended any gender-inspired labels or limitations for me. Corin's voice and the vocal interplay between Corin and Carey can take some getting used to, but once you're hooked, you are HOOKED. I hope, with these re-releases, they will gain a new generation of fans. Can't wait for the new album!
|
Plus it's 2014 and any prejudices about whether girls can rock as hard as boys needs to go in that same dumper as 'women aren't funny'. I say welcome to the party!

It was The Woods which got me hooked though and when I moved on to Dig Me Out I was shortly grabbing the rest of their back catalogue. And yes, Carrie and Corin's interplay is what makes the band for me. |
their new record's title track rawks haard
rest of the album sorta samey' |

Love the new album, they have not missed a beat. One of the greatest bands ever. |
whups i listened to the wrong record lol
i actually like the actual new record a lot more my fave songs so far are: |
New album is tight af. Really like it.
|
The new album is remarkable. Fits in well with their past works. Can't wait to see their Texas shows.
I saw S-K numerous times during their past tours. They are a live act not to be missed. |
Yeah, last few weeks I've really been digging it. I miss some of the experimentation on the last album, though.
But, this is a collection of tightly written, tightly played rock songs. Some excellent stuff. Favorite song is: No Anthems |

Just rented Dig Me Out from the local library. Liking it, might have to check out more of their stuff.

I just checked out the Woods for the first time recently, it was my first exposure to Sleater-Kinney, and I looooved it, really ambitious but really well done. I checked their new one too when it came out, it was good, I didn't fall in love with it like the Woods but it was also a lot more stripped back. They're pretty different albums and I don't have a background with their earlier stuff (besides "I wanna be your joey ramone" don't ask me why i uncapitalized it) so that might be why I didn't get into it as much, but they're definitely someone I'll be checking into further.
