A good amount of Morrissey's lyrics reference the films and 'kitchen sink dramas' he watched growing up, as well as a ton of literary references. Current events too, Suffer Little Children was about the Moors Murders.

I've had a tumultuous relationship with The Smiths (and with Morrissey). I used to really hate them. Then I grew to appreciate them more. Now they're firmly in the category of bands whose singles I like but whose albums I can't make it all the way through.

Pretty much the same for me. I like an occasional song here or there but I don't think I've ever made it through one of their albums without using fast-forward or skipping over songs entirely during playback.

Somehow this feels like a more brutal indictment.

My opinion on the Smiths is similar to Janszoon's, I only like a handful of songs. I understand their influence, but Morrissey's overall attitude and bad college experiences with their fans kind of put me off them.
I'll jam out if How Soon Is Now comes on the radio or something but I wouldn't really call myself a fan. |
